Epitel, Inc. closed a $26 million Series B round to expand commercial access to its wireless EEG monitoring system, the Salt Lake City digital health company announced. Catalyst Health Ventures and Genoa Ventures co-led the round, with participation from new and existing investors.
The money will fund three things: growing Epitel’s sales, marketing and customer experience teams; streamlining how hospitals and clinics deploy the technology; and expanding access to ambulatory, at-home monitoring now that the system carries FDA clearance for patients as young as one year old.
Same investors, bigger bet
This is the second time Catalyst Health Ventures and Genoa Ventures have co-led a round for Epitel. The pair also led the company’s $12.5 million Series A in February 2022, which followed more than $7.5 million in NIH and Epilepsy Foundation grant funding. Epitel’s flagship product, REMI, uses wireless, wearable sensors to record brain activity at home for up to several weeks at a time, with an AI layer called REMI Vigilenz that flags potential seizures for clinicians reviewing the data, according to the company’s announcement.
The company was founded by Mark Lehmkuhle, a University of Utah-trained researcher whose early work grew out of the university’s neurosurgery department; Lehmkuhle now serves as chief technology officer after Steve Pacelli, a former Dexcom executive, took over as CEO. REMI has picked up five FDA 510(k) clearances since its first in 2021, most recently an expansion in March 2025 to cover infants and children as young as one year old.
The addressable gap is significant: a 2023 study in Neurology: Clinical Practice found that only 27 percent of U.S. hospitals have EEG capacity, part of why roughly 40 percent of the 9.2 million Americans who experience seizures or seizure-like events annually lack access to the test. Traditional ambulatory continuous EEG typically only covers three days of monitoring, a limitation Epitel is targeting directly.
“Millions of Americans with suspected seizures still face significant barriers to diagnosis because access to EEG remains limited, particularly outside major medical centers,” Pacelli says. “Closing this Series B round represents a pivotal milestone for our team. With these resources, we are aggressively building out our commercial footprint to get REMI into the hands of those who will most benefit from it.”
An outside clinical voice
Daniel Friedman, professor and director of the epilepsy division at NYU Langone Health, says existing tools have long fallen short. “Established EEG tools for objectively assessing seizure burden have been limited by monitoring duration, as in ambulatory EEG, or by cost and an unnatural setting, as in inpatient video EEG monitoring,” Friedman says. “REMI provides a new solution for diagnosis and disease tracking on clinically relevant timescales of days to weeks, in a patient-friendly, convenient way.”
Epitel competes in a field that includes Ceribell, Empatica and Epiminder, according to PitchBook, and the round adds to a broader run of digital health financings in Utah this year, following deals like Tava Health’s $40 million Series C and Xenter’s $58.25 million Series B. With the new capital, Epitel plans to widen its dedicated field team and push REMI further into ambulatory and pediatric care settings.
