Was there a pivotal moment in your life that brought you to where you are today?

As a kid, I lived a very polarized lifestyle; with one parent, money wasn’t much of an issue—luxury items and global travel were normal. With my other parent, we struggled chronically, constantly worrying about keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table. I think this gave me an unfair advantage in my entrepreneurial mindset, as I could always clearly see what was achievable in terms of financial success. Still, experiencing genuine poverty gave my personality a deep, undying grit and resilience. That upbringing indeed set a course for the direction of my life, but I believe my current ventures gained their footing when my husband and I faced a fork in the road and had to weigh the possibility of ending our relationship. I reflected on my childhood and realized that I knew what a broken home looked and felt like, but even as an adult, I wasn’t yet certain if unconditional love, forgiveness and grace truly existed. In our most authentic demonstration of hopeful faith, instead of growing apart, we leaned in, and my husband and I created Gam3r Studios together. In all areas of life, whether it’s marriage or business, I truly believe in the wisdom of Jim Rohn: “It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind, that determines which way we will go.”

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

In 10 years, I hope to be somewhat successful in navigating the parenting of my then-teenagers! I also hope to have built a truly amazing array of online video games/worlds capable of facilitating comfortable living wages for any player. My aim is for Gam3r Studios to show the world how practical and prevalent gamification will be within every industry. I am also anxious to see my contribution to educational technology spread globally by 2033. I am inspired to think about how high we can raise the bar, not only in how advanced K-12 academics can be but also in how readily attainable this level of education can be for young minds in all parts of the world and from all walks of life.

What advice do you have for other young professionals?

As a generation, we are facing massive financial burdens and hardships. As a result, a growing number of us are embracing side hustles and entrepreneurship, striving for multiple streams of income because one career-track or job is often alarmingly insufficient. Consider this: The age of asking, “What do you do for a living?” is over. Instead, start embracing conversations about the different ways you and your peers are generating income and also conversations around what activities you and your peers engage in on a day-to-day basis. These can be two very different conversations nowadays, and that’s pretty exciting. Times are challenging, but the world has never been more full of opportunity and creative strategy than it is now. I feel we have a profound duty to capitalize on this. Work smart, get gritty and build your empire. We have the liberty to do great things because we can and we should, not merely because we need to pay the bills. Let’s all dream much bigger than the ceilings we feel ourselves limited to and take the actions needed to create new realities!
