OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University’s (UVU) computer science program positions students at the forefront of a field Research.com recently ranked the #1 college major to pursue, offering ABET-accredited degrees, experienced faculty, and a hands-on curriculum. In 2026, 77% of UVU computer science alumni self-reported full-time employment. Of those, 72% said their work was very related to their degree, and 60% were employed within UVU’s service region.
The UVU Department of Computer Science offers degrees and emphases in web development, secure computing, core computer science, software engineering, software development, data science, and computer science education for future high school teachers. Beginning fall 2026, the department will also offer a new artificial intelligence track within the computer science program, expanding student pathways into one of the fastest-growing fields in the industry. Faculty members bring years of industry experience and academic expertise across a wide range of specializations, giving students direct access to practical, relevant instruction.
“UVU computer science graduates have earned a strong reputation across the industry for being ready to contribute from day one, a reflection of the hands-on, real-world experience our students bring to the workforce,” said George Rudolph, computer science department chair. “Many of our students work while completing their degrees, and that practical edge is something employers notice. Our industry advisory board consistently tells us UVU graduates hit the ground running faster than those from other programs in the region.”
The program’s curriculum balances hands-on, applied learning with rigorous theory, preparing graduates to meet the demands of industry, research, and government. The department serves a diverse student body, including working students and those supporting families, and consistently produces graduates who enter the workforce ready to contribute from day one. More than 50% of UVU computer science alumni report starting a new job as a result of graduation.
Also launching fall 2026, UVU will introduce new quantum computing coursework in direct support of workforce development efforts under the Governor’s Utah Quantum Initiative. This addition reflects UVU’s commitment to preparing students for the emerging technologies shaping the future of Utah’s economy and beyond.
The program’s impact extends beyond the classroom. At the spring 2026 National SkillsUSA Computer Programming Championship, UVU student Kenyan Allen took 4th place. In addition to SkillsUSA, UVU has six extracurricular clubs related to computer science, including Girls Who Code, Cybersecurity Club, and AI Interface Club.
UVU’s computer science program holds accreditation from the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.
