SALT LAKE CITY — After more than two decades helping nonprofits find the money they need to serve their communities, Salt Lake City based fundraising professional and entrepreneur Julee Laurent has turned that experience into a technology platform designed to help the next generation of nonprofit professionals do the same.
Givaxis is a funding discovery app that gives nonprofits access to more than 90,000 prospective funders, including foundations, corporate sponsors, corporate foundations, community foundations, hospital foundations, CRA banks and credit unions, and other funding sources.
Laurent created Givaxis after seeing a gap between traditional grant research tools and the broader prospecting work development professionals actually do. While grant databases help nonprofits identify grant opportunities and grantmakers, other potential sources of funding often require entirely separate research.
“A corporate foundation and a corporate sponsor aren’t the same prospect,” said Laurent, founder and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Eowyn Technologies, which developed Givaxis. “Neither is a community foundation, a hospital foundation or a bank with Community Reinvestment Act funding. They have different opportunities, different decision-makers and different reasons for supporting a nonprofit. Development and fundraising professionals need to know those differences.”
Laurent knows the challenge firsthand. Over a career spanning more than 20 years, she has raised more than $50 million and built funding strategies encompassing grants, corporate partnerships, sponsorships, major gifts and other sources of support.
“I remember being new to fundraising and nobody telling me who to call or where to find the dollars I needed. I was just told to figure it out,” Laurent said. “Over the years, I learned where to look, who to approach and how to determine whether a funder was a good fit. I realized there are so many people entering nonprofit fundraising or changing careers because they want to do meaningful work, who don’t know where to begin finding funders. I wanted to give them a head start, so they can spend less time figuring out where to look and more time building relationships.”
That experience became the foundation for Givaxis.
The app allows users to search for funders geographically by state and county and provides information intended to help nonprofit professionals research prospects before beginning outreach. Records can include resources such as EIN information, specialized searches and direct links that help users determine whether an organization is a potential fit. It also has ‘pro-tips’ on how to use that information.
The goal, Laurent said, isn’t to replace the human side of fundraising. It’s to create more time for it.
“Fundraising is about relationships,” Laurent said. “Technology should help us figure out who we need to talk to and give us the information to make that conversation worthwhile.”
Designed to Be Accessible to Nonprofits
Laurent also wanted Givaxis to be affordable for nonprofits of different sizes. A free plan includes three searches per month. Paid plans range from $39 per month for 10 searches to $150 per month for unlimited searches.
Givaxis is currently available for Apple devices through the App Store, with a Google Play release planned for mid-September.
The company will introduce Givaxis to nonprofit professionals at the Utah Nonprofits Association conference on September 30 and the Colorado Nonprofit Association conference in Denver on October 16.
