The Road Home has recently named Sarah Nielson as its new director of communications. Nielson brings extensive experience navigating homelessness systems, public policy and high-stakes communications to the organization.

Nielson most recently served as the public information officer for Utah’s Office of Homeless Services, where she led communications efforts across state agencies, municipal partners, nonprofit providers, and community stakeholders. In that role, she helped build public understanding and trust around homelessness and the systems that support people experiencing it.

“Sarah holds a rare combination of strategic communications expertise and firsthand experience within Utah’s homelessness response system,” said Michelle Fynn, executive director of The Road Home. “We are grateful to welcome her leadership at a time when clear, thoughtful communication is essential to advancing this work and building understanding in our community.”

In addition to her state-level experience, Nielson has held senior communications and marketing roles and consulted for a range of nonprofit, healthcare, and tourism organizations, providing strategic guidance on complex messaging, public education campaigns, and communications during periods of significant organizational change.

Nielson’s experience reflects a long-standing focus on equity and community partnership. She holds a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University and has served on the board for Habitat for Humanity and currently serves on the board of Family Promise, further reflecting her personal investment in homelessness services in our state.

“The Road Home plays a vital role in our community and homelessness services system, and I’m deeply motivated by its commitment to dignity, partnerships, and solutions that help individuals and families move out of homelessness and toward long-term stability,” said Nielson. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to help elevate this work and strengthen understanding around how these systems support people during critical moments in their lives.”

As Director of Communications, Nielson will lead The Road Home’s media relations, crisis communications, messaging strategy, and storytelling efforts, supporting the organization’s work to help individuals and families exit homelessness through shelter, housing, and supportive services.
