What are you most proud of in your career thus far?
I am genuinely proud of my entire career and what I’ve been able to accomplish, but I am the most proud of the past three years. Getting your MFA while leading a non-profit and working full-time sounds unfeasible, and it is. There were several times, especially in my final semester, when I wasn’t sure I would make it. My family, friends, professors and coworkers all kept me sane and healthy and I love them for it. I am proud of myself as an individual for making it to the end and producing the quality of work that I did, but I’m equally proud of the realization that I have built a deep support system that never fails me.
What advice do you have for other young professionals?
Don’t be shy! I spent my college years and early career worried about bothering professionals. Now that I am one, I encourage all of the students I talk with to reach out to me or attend industry events and be brave enough to introduce themselves to someone new. The fastest and easiest way to get the job you want is to start networking early. I would also encourage any young professional to try and find a mentor. Look for someone you admire whose career path is similar to what you want and let them guide you. Even the best college program will only teach you a fraction of what you need to know to grow successfully in the professional world. A good mentor can fill that gap.
