Verona Sagato-Mauga has made history as the first Samoan elected to the Utah State Legislature and first Samoan woman serving in any continental U.S. legislature. Her multifaceted leadership spans government, healthcare and entrepreneurship. In her first completed legislative session, Verona passed three bills addressing criminal sexual conduct, veteran protections and bicycle safety.

As co-owner of My Choice Utah, she provides safe homes for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her co-owned Sagato Bakery & Café serves as a community gathering space that strengthens cultural connections. Her co-founded organization Le Malu amplifies Pacific Islander voices through mentorship and cultural preservation initiatives. This expertise in healthcare, hospitality and leadership demonstrates her versatile understanding of community needs.

“Being a woman in leadership means carving a path while walking it,” she says. “I never wanted to just be in the room — I wanted to change what was possible for others.” Her leadership philosophy centers on genuine connection and active listening, ensuring no voice goes unheard.
