    Unlimited PTO is actually a myth. If companies actually have a policy like that which is utilized, they would soon be out of business. Really.

      I would disagree, I think it does the opposite and prevents burn-out. When an employee feels appreciated by their employer, the employee feels a duty to their employer. As a result, they’re less likely to abuse an unlimited PTO policy. I had an unlimited PTO policy at my previous job, and I learned to use discretion due to my respect for my job and superiors. I don’t think I am out of line when I say most professionals take pride in and enjoy what they do. I believe that these types of professionals feel a sense of duty to the company they work for, preventing unlimited PTO abuse.

        I also would disagree. George, you are right if the company hires the wrong people. The right people are on board with contributing to the desired outcomes of their companies and prioritize their contributions. They feel empowered to make important decisions which include, when and why to utilize their PTO benefit.

        I chair a group of significant CEOs and one of my member companies adopted this policy at the beginning of the year, while the full results are not in, turnover has been reduced and their is no direct abuse being noted. This company employs everyone from warehouse blue collar to high level execs.

      They’ve actually shown that employees at companies with unlimited PTO policies tend to take less time off. I’d rather just get a generous PTO policy than unlimited.

        This can be an issue, depending on how management approaches it, but I work where there is unlimited PTO, and I can say that for me, I am grateful to not have to wonder if getting sick will cut into my next vacation, or if my wife is sick, and I need to take care of her for a day or two if that means that I shouldn’t go on that camping trip next week. For me, it just takes the stress out of counting days off. Honestly, at any given moment, I couldn’t tell you how many days I’ve had off in the past year. But I can say, when my next vacation is, and have confidence that sickness won’t keep me from being able to go (unless of course I get sick when I’m supposed to be leaving, but nothing can help that).

        Also, I’m really grateful that if I get a cold, I can simply work from home and nobody will complain.

        Unlimited PTO doesn’t mean you take tons of time off, or that you need to be afraid to take any off… it just simply takes away the stress of planning every day of your PTO, and knowing that it is a house of cards that any little thing might change. And if you are a parent, that can be a life saver.

      Unlimited PTO is certainly no myth. I work for one of the companies listed above that has unlimited PTO. When an employee and an employer are both working toward the same thing, there’s no employee in the world that would take advantage of an employer like that. Your comment makes me wonder what type of companies you’ve worked for in the past… your perception is that of one who has no interest in working toward something other than a paycheck. Send your resume to every single one of the companies in this list that has unlimited PTO, and when you’re hired at one, you’ll see that it’s certainly a real perk offered by great companies.

    Unlimited PTO simply implies flexibility but it doesn’t mean that you can take half a year off while collecting a paycheck (your employer would go out of business). Just remember, there is no such thing as a “free lunch” since there is always something expected in return. The main goal of each company is to get employees hired that will get the job done, so your workload and daily responsibilities come first and you still have to use your best judgement when requesting to take time off. If you happen to take off too much time then maybe your job responsibilities are not sufficient to justify having your position. Also, from what I have seen, many employers push for a work-life balance or unlimited PTO but then they contradict themselves by piling up new projects and deadlines onto their employees, which gets in the way of them taking time-off. In my opinion, if it’s too good to be true than most likely it is.
