Salt Lake City’s annual block party aims to fund business incubator for underrepresented startups

Salt Lake City—Black-led, non-profit creative agency, Versatile Image (VI), hosts its third annual UNITY Block Party: Discovering the “U” in Community, on Sept. 16th at Library Square. In partnership with Yelp, this event aims to celebrate creativity, foster community, and create innovative solutions that drive economic growth.

“Imagine your ideal world, brought to life as your local community unites to make it real,” shared VI’s Founder and CEO, Michelda George, who also serves as Strategic Program Manager for the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity for USBCI. Her agency has collaborated with multiple Utah companies, including Makaya Caters, Utah Black Chamber, Key Bank, Afro Paradigm, Lululemon, Patagonia, and Redmond Real Salt.

Supported by various sponsors, including the thirst murderers, Liquid Death, this block party will have activities for all ages. There will be a retail marketplace, food trucks, art installation, live music and MORE! This inclusive showcase of art will conclude with an evening concert featuring local artists and a performance by headliner “newly signed to Columbia Records” INIKO.

Proceeds will go towards VI’s next organizational goal: developing plans for a business incubator space where artists can connect and flourish. This location will act as an innovative hub for creative professionals in Utah and support growing small businesses and startups.

“Salt Lake is a place where diverse pastimes, cultures, and landscapes come together in our modern mountain hub of the West. The UNITY Block Party is a perfect culmination of what makes our community so unique, and Visit Salt Lake is happy to support Versatile Image. Events like this truly showcase the incredible diversity and vibrancy of our urban city center,” said Kaitlin Eskelson, President, and CEO of Visit Salt Lake.
