SALT LAKE CITY — TechBuzz News, Utah’s premier source for in-depth reporting on technology, announced its transition to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, formalizing its role as a permanent, community-owned resource for Utah’s technology ecosystem.

Founded in July 2020, TechBuzz News was created to give Utah’s fast-growing tech community consistent, credible, and locally grounded coverage. Over the past five years, TechBuzz has published more than 1,850 stories highlighting founders, startups, investors, technologists, and innovation leaders—helping document and positively amplify Utah’s emergence as a nationally recognized technology hub.

From its inception, TechBuzz News has operated with a simple principle: this publication belongs to the Utah tech community. Transitioning to a nonprofit structure ensures its long-term independence, sustainability, and mission-driven focus—free from commercial pressure and aligned with the public interest.

“TechBuzz News has always been about serving the ecosystem, not extracting from it,” said Paul Ahlstrom, Chairman and CEO of TechBuzz News. “By becoming a nonprofit, we’re ensuring this platform remains a trusted, independent resource that strengthens Utah’s tech community for generations to come.”

TechBuzz News was co-founded by Paul Ahlstrom, Mark Tullis, and Robb Lifferth. Together, they built TechBuzz from the ground up with a commitment to fair coverage, ecosystem building, and community trust.

Tullis will continue to lead editorial direction going forward. Under his leadership, TechBuzz News has earned a reputation for thoughtful reporting, founder-centric storytelling, and constructive engagement across Utah’s innovation economy.

In addition to its journalism, TechBuzz News has served as a training and launchpad for emerging talent, working with more than 100 student interns who gained hands-on experience in reporting, media, and storytelling while engaging directly with Utah’s startup and technology landscape.

Transitioning to a nonprofit structure will enable TechBuzz News to:

  • Ensure long-term sustainability as a community resource
  • Preserve editorial independence aligned with public-interest journalism
  • Deepen engagement with students, founders, investors, and institutions
  • Expand partnerships, education initiatives, and ecosystem support

As a nonprofit, TechBuzz News will continue its mission to inform, connect, and elevate Utah’s technology community—preserving its history while helping shape its future.

As part of its launch, TechBuzz is now accepting charitable contributions to support its programs and operations. The organization has applied for recognition as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit with the Internal Revenue Service. While the organization’s application is pending, donations will be used exclusively to further TechBuzz’s charitable mission.
