COVID-19 recover study in urgent need of study participants

Salt Lake City — The University of Utah’s Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational & Environmental Health (RMCOEH) in partnership with the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and ABT Associates is urgently seeking study participants for its RECOVER COVID-19 study. The study’s goal is to increase understanding about COVID infection rates, illness characterization, risk, and protective factors, and differences between symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals, possible re-infections, and efficacy of interventions and the vaccine specifically among healthcare providers, first responders, and frontline workers.

The RECOVER study organizers are actively recruiting 660 healthcare, first responders and frontline workers (grocery store employees, teachers, construction, manufacturing, restaurant, etc.) to participate in the approximately nine-month study. However, study participants must enter the study prior to receiving their first dose of the COVID vaccine.

“Recruiting healthcare providers who have NOT received the first dose of the vaccine is our greatest challenge,” said Dr. Sarang Kim Yoon, director of the RECOVER study at the University of Utah. “If you have not received the vaccine, we urgently need you to participate in the study. The study’s findings will be used for years to come in helping safeguard healthcare providers, first responders and frontline workers against COVID and future epidemics.”

Compensation of up to $400 is offered for participants, as well as free weekly COVID tests. Participants must also complete short weekly surveys (via text message), submit weekly self-collected respiratory specimens (easy nasal swabs), and have blood drawn three times during the study for antibody testing.
