Clay Partain’s visionary leadership has revitalized the sports tourism industry in Utah, significantly impacting the state’s visitor economy.
Under his guidance, Sports Salt Lake has become a major force in tourism, responsible for a significant portion of Visit Salt Lake’s bookings. His strategic initiatives have brought 237 sports-related events to Salt Lake over the last three years, attracting over 1.17 million attendees with a direct economic impact of $487 million. Notable events include the annual USA Volleyball Salt Lake City Showdown — which brings close to 30,000 visitors to the destination over a two-week period every year — the NCAA 2024 Men’s Basketball 1st and 2nd Rounds, and the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West President’s Cup.
Clay’s leadership style is defined by collaboration and empowerment, fostering a team environment built on trust and respect. His dedication to developing strong community partnerships underscores his approach, which includes working closely with city leaders, economic development offices and venue managers to leverage the power of sports tourism.
Clay’s role extends beyond local efforts — his influence is national. He serves as the secretary and treasurer on the Sports Events & Tourism Association board and founded the Sports Tourism Summit, contributing to strategic discussions and establishing robust networks that promote Salt Lake as a prime sports destination.
