Wasatch Crest Unveils the Jupiter Program, a Women-only Residential Substance Use Disorder Treatment Center in Park City, UT

The expansion complements Wasatch Crest’s established continuum of care for men and women struggling with substance use disorders (SUDs) and underlying mental health conditions, while allowing Wasatch Crest to offer full-scale gender-specific SUD treatment.

Wasatch Crest announces its newest program, Jupiter, a women-only residential SUD treatment center in Park City scheduled to open early this year. Accommodating up to sixteen female clients, the 10,000-square-foot, mountainside residence is the first residential treatment facility of its kind in Summit County.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, SUDs and overdose deaths increased at alarming rates, presenting a growing need for SUD treatment services in our communities. The community of Park City has been, until now, without residential SUD treatment services for adult men and women. With the new Jupiter location, we will be able to offer women a beautiful, welcoming, alpine setting to begin their recovery with programming specifically designed to address their needs.” said Jim Huffman, founder and CEO of Wasatch Crest.

Research shows that compared to mixed-gender treatment, women-only treatment increases client success rates by 44% for up to 10 years following treatment. Women are also twice as likely to enter and complete women-only treatment programs versus mixed-gender programs, contributing to more successful treatment results.

“Treatment for SUDs has historically been developed for men. More recently treatment has evolved to account for some gender differences but has remained largely in a mixed-gender setting. Our Jupiter program will allow our clinical and medical team to really focus on issues specific to each of the women we treat. It supports a safe and healthy environment of care which is crucial to healing and beginning long-term recovery. Not only can we design meaningful curriculum specific to the needs of women, but we can foster a sense of connection and community without many of the distractions that occur in a mixed-gender setting.” said Rich McDonald, CMHC, executive director of Wasatch Crest.

The Jupiter residential treatment program will account for the different patterns of SUDs women exhibit compared with men. For instance:

  • Gender differences exist in rates of dependence, choice of substance, and how the brain responds to substance use.
  • Women, especially those with children, delay obtaining treatment longer than men.
  •  Gender differences often exist in co-occurring mental health disorders.

Additionally, Jupiter’s clinical programming will be tailored to the gender-specific influences that women commonly experience, many of which at higher rates than men, including:

  • Trauma
  • Abuse
  • Mental health conditions
  • Struggles with self-esteem
  • Homelessness
  • And more

“At Wasatch Crest, our mission is to make the highest quality treatment accessible to the greatest number of people. We have a passion for helping individuals struggling with SUDs, and seeing them create new stories in recovery. Named after the highest peak in Park City, Jupiter will offer exceptional care and support to women seeking to overcome SUDs and climb to new heights in sobriety.” Huffman said.

An extension of Wasatch Crest’s current SUD treatment services, which include residential treatment, various levels of outpatient treatment, and transitional living programs, Jupiter is Wasatch Crest’s fourth location. The expansion allows Wasatch Crest to offer full-scale gender-specific SUD treatment in Utah.

“We’ve always had the vision to offer gender-specific treatment to our clients. With the opening of the Jupiter Program, this vision becomes a reality. We are excited to launch this groundbreaking program in Summit County, and we’re especially energized to be partnering with other groups who are working to meet the mental and behavioral healthcare needs in our community. Jupiter will be an added resource at a pivotal time. We are confident that Jupiter and our newly unveiled gender-specific programs for both men and women, will positively impact the lives of countless individuals and their families for years to come.” Huffman said.
