Utah Advanced Materials Manufacturing Initiative partners with AUVSI to introduce advanced materials

Salt Lake City—The Utah Advanced Materials Manufacturing Initiative (UAMMI) has partnered with the Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) to provide an educational series, which introduces Advanced Materials Manufacturing to the Advance Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft manufacturing market.

The first course – Composites: Lighter, Stronger, Better – teaches AAM aircraft companies how composites are helping the industry to be better stewards of the world by identifying what materials are used to make composites, and how composites impact weight, strength and stiffness of manufacturing materials. UAMMI provided content for the series through a licensing agreement with the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) for a four-part series developed by Dr. Brent Strong.

The Composites: Lighter, Stronger, Better course objectives are:

  • Understand what composites are and why they are different from other structural materials like metals.
  • Understand designing of composites and why they are more complex but better (lighter, stronger, stiffer)than other structural materials.
  • Improve decision-making capability when considering composites.
  • Appreciate the many methods used to make composite parts and when each method should be used.

The course is offered through AUVSI’s community engagement and education platform, Aville, which consists of a growing diverse population of individuals from more than 60 countries; all 50 US states; the air, ground, maritime and cyber domains; commercial, government, defense and academic sectors; with a high percentage of users in engineering, R&D, and management careers. The uncrewed systems and autonomy community is experiencing an increased focus on finding creative ways to improve manufacturing capacity and provide technically enhanced, more adaptable uncrewed systems. By introducing the AUVSI Aville audience to the composites and additive manufacturing courses, UAMMI aims to promote awareness of this important advancement to the AAM manufacturing industry.

The Composites: Lighter, Stronger, Better course is offered at no charge and can be accessed through this link Start Composites: Lighter, Stronger, Better course
