Salt Lake County and Westminster College Offer Free Tax Prep Assistance

Salt Lake City — Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson, County Treasurer Wayne Cushing and Westminster College urge residents to take advantage of free tax prep assistance available now until April 15th.

The free program will operate Monday through Thursday from 4:30 p.m., to 9:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the north lobby of the Salt Lake County Government Center. It also operates on the Westminster College campus year-round.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps people who make $54,000 or less annually and need help in preparing their own tax returns. Internal Revenue Service (IRS)-certified volunteers provide free basic, advanced, foreign student, military and international income tax return preparation. They can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify.

Westminster’s VITA Clinic also provides financial advocacy services by partnering with Workforce Services, the Salt Lake County Treasurer and nonprofits throughout the valley. In partnership with the County Treasurer, Westminster helps low- to moderate- income families and the elderly obtain tax relief on real property taxes.

This is the sixth year Salt Lake County has partnered with tax-preparation volunteers from Westminster College. During that time, more than 10,000 residents have received assistance with their tax filings. In 2019, more than two thousand individuals and families were served with over 3 million dollars in tax refunds brought back into our community. Residents can receive more information and make appointments by calling 801-210-8291 or going online to westminstercollege.edu/tax-clinic
