Salt Lake County breaks ground on major regional park in South Jordan

South Jordan— Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation in partnership with the City of South Jordan has begun construction of a major regional park in the southwest quadrant city. Phase I of Bingham Creek Regional Park will feature approximately 65 acres of amenities: six multi-purpose fields, a playground, walking paths, pavilions, bike trails, a disc golf course, restrooms, parking ,and a maintenance facility. Future planned phases of the park will add an additional 90 acres to the park.

The park will be located at 102000 South 4800 West, the site of the former Welby Gravel Pit.  Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation has been planning a park at the location since developing a conceptual plan for the park in 2011. Site remediation work began in 2016.

“I am thrilled to see this site transform from a literal pit in the ground into the jewel of the southwest quadrant,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “Parks serve as a refuge for residents to get out and recreate and stay healthy and our regional parks, like Bingham Creek, do this on a large scale – delivering a positive impact across many communities.”

Phase I development of the park is made possible by the Zoo, Arts and Parks & Recreation Bond, which was approved by Salt Lake County voters in 2016, as well as the County/South Jordan partnership. Similar to Sugar House Park, Bingham Creek Regional Park will be managed by a park authority, a board consisting of community representatives and government stakeholders.

“Bingham Creek Regional Park will be the largest park in Salt Lake County when it is complete and will be a unique generational gathering place, recreational area, and trail hub in our community,” said South Jordan Mayor Dawn Ramsey. “We are grateful for the creation of the park authority and look forward to working together with Salt Lake County as we continue to provide open space and recreational opportunities for residents of our city and all those throughout the southwest region of the county.”

The park was designed by Think Architecture, who partnered with Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation to conduct a community outreach process to assist in the park’s design. It will be constructed by Hogan and Associates Construction. Phase I is anticipated to be completed in October 2022.
