MIDWAY, Utah — Homestead, the iconic mountain destination known for its rich history in Midway, Utah, proudly announces the reopening of the historic Virginia House, a beloved building that has stood at the heart of Midway since 1886.
Following a year-long restoration project, the property has been thoughtfully preserved and repurposed to feature new attributes, including a locally curated gift shop, community gathering spaces, and the Homestead,Autograph Collection Residences sales gallery—an elegant space designed to welcome prospective homeowners and provide them with an immersive introduction to the community and its residential units developed in collaboration with Marriott International’s renowned Autograph Collection brand, and more.
The iconic building’s official reopening will be marked with a ribbon-cutting celebration on Tuesday, September 16, during which exciting new features of the property will be unveiled along with remarks from Midway’s historian and the property team.
“Restoring the Virginia House has been a labor of respect and stewardship,” said Erich Smith, General Manager at Homestead. “The Homestead team is excited to share this moment in history with the community as we celebrate this unveiling.”
Built in the 1880’s by Swiss immigrants Simon and Maria Schneitter as the original lodging building for Schneitter’s Hot Pot Resort, the Virginia House is the only remaining Federal-style building in the area. Recognized for its historic significance, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The restoration highlights the original brick facade and stone foundation, along with a repainted exterior to its historic white, upgraded windows and doors to honor the building’s original design, new landscaping, and an outdoor fire pit, ensuring the landmark remains a timeless centerpiece of Midway’s history. In addition, the sunroom will be fully rebuilt with a small bar serving drinks and shared bites, creating a warm and inviting hub for locals, residents, and visitors alike.
“The reopening of the Virginia House reflects Homestead’s commitment to preserving Midway’s heritage while reimagining its future,” said Smith. “As Homestead continues to elevate the guest experience, this historic landmark stands ready to welcome locals, residents, and guests for generations to come.”
