PARK CITY, Utah — Kimball Art Center has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to pursue a new, purpose-built art space in Kimball Junction next to the former Skullcandy property owned by Summit County.
“This new building will allow us a sustainable future and will deepen our impact to serve the community through mission-specific architecture. We are very excited for this next chapter,” said Aldy Milliken, Executive Director of Kimball Art Center.
Years of strategic planning, community engagement, and reflection have shaped the vision for a new space that responds to evolving community needs and reaffirms the organization’s role as a cultural anchor in the region. This milestone marks the next phase in Kimball Art Center’s ongoing commitment to inspire, educate, and connect through art.
Over the past year, Kimball Art Center has convened civic leaders, educators, donors, and partners to define architectural priorities and ensure alignment with its mission. With support from nationally recognized cultural consultants, the organization is now advancing a formal exploration of a site adjacent to the former Skullcandy building in Kimball Junction. The envisioned location will bring Kimball Art Center closer to a majority of its current and future visitors, particularly those in the 84098 zip code, Summit County, and the Salt Lake Valley. With adjacent amenities such as a future library, civic buildings, and a major transit hub, the site positions the Art Center at the heart of a dynamic new cultural corridor.
“While Kimball Art Center was proud to be an early collaborator in the Bonanza Park development effort, recent shifts in the project have prompted our organization to consider options that best support our long-term goals,” explains Milliken. “This new property will be more accessible, so this move allows us to expand our reach and deepen our impact across Utah, plus the parcel is big enough for the Kimball to grow with intention. It’s exciting to pursue our vision of our own local version of a 21st-century art institution. As the City works toward its own final vision for the area, we remain committed to serving as a supportive community resource.”
The decision to pursue Kimball Junction is driven by several key priorities:
- Mission Alignment: As Park City’s longest-standing nonprofit arts institution, Kimball Art Center remains committed to creating accessible, high-quality experiences that inspire creativity and foster connections across all ages and backgrounds.
- Accessibility: Located at the gateway to Park City, the new site increases access for regional visitors, families, and educators, while easing travel logistics for students and staff.
- Sustainability: Proximity to public transportation supports more sustainable commuting, reduces traffic congestion, and aligns with the organization’s environmental values.
- Economic viability: Dakota-Pacific Corp is donating 1.1 acres of land to the Kimball Art Center, combined with a reduced rate purchase of .5 acres, enough land for the Kimball to grow and expand at a cost that respects its fiduciary obligations.
- Project Timeline: The development of the Kimball Junction development area is proceeding at pace, allowing Kimball Art Center to vacate its current temporary location sooner and establish a new permanent home.
- Connection to Nature: Surrounded by open space, the Swaner Preserve, and expansive mountain views, the setting enhances the creative atmosphere and reflects the Art Center’s deep connection to the land.
The new Kimball Art Center will continue to welcome more than 85,000 annual art experiences through exhibitions, educational programs, and community events. With dedicated spaces for artists, students, and families, the new location aims to serve as a cultural hub for Park City and beyond for years to come.
