CLEARFIELD, Utah — With a semi breaking through an oversize ribbon, Davis Technical College celebrated the opening of a new Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) driving range during a morning ceremony at Freeport West in Clearfield.

Partners, Geneva Rock and Clyde Companies, provided a large donation of asphalt for the range, and were on hand to discuss the continuing need for skilled drivers. Since Geneva Rock is one of Utah’s leading suppliers of construction products and services, including concrete, asphalt, sand, and gravel, they hire many drivers with the skills that the Davis Tech program, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class A, provide.

Many students enroll in the CDL program to pursue high-wage careers as drivers for companies like Geneva Rock. Other students, like Sam Johnson, who currently works at Utah State University and runs the Kaysville Research Farm, came to the CDL program to quickly learn larger vehicle and trailer skills to move equipment safely on the highway.

“This new driving course makes learning so much better,” says Johnson, “Students won’t need to commute to the course, which gives them more driving time. Now, the classroom and the course are close to each other, and that’s much more convenient.”

Previously, the classroom was at Freeport West and the students used a course generously provided by Weber State University at their Davis campus, located several miles away.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Weber State University for allowing our driving course on their campus while we secured land and developed this new driving range,” said Darin Brush. “They’ve always been a strong partner and truly stepped up when we needed support. We’re fortunate to have so many outstanding industry and educational partners.”

This purpose-built driving range reflects the college’s strong commitment to workforce development and economic growth, while helping to shape brighter futures for students and their families.
