Salt Lake City — Visit the Glass Art Guild of Utah for its 22nd anniversary show and sale at Red Butte Garden Nov. 7 - Dec. 21, Glass in the Garden. Explore hundreds of artisan-crafted and one-of-a-kind art pieces and gifts from 34 fused-glass artists including a large supply of glass Christmas ornaments and jewelry. The show will take place on the second floor of the Red Butte Garden building, 300 Wakara Way, SLC. An opening reception will be held on Nov. 9 from 2pm to 5pm.

The annual show is the guild community’s chance to showcase and sell their beautiful one-of-a-kind creations. The show is also sponsored by Red Butte Garden. Each participant will be bringing up to 25 art pieces not including the display and sale of hundreds of jewelry items and ornaments. That means the show will include over 1,000 glass items and is one of the largest glass shows in the nation. The majority of the proceeds from the show go to the participating artists with a small percentage going back to the guild and designated items going to a newly established scholarship fund. The show is also a fundraiser for Red Butte Garden.
“Our annual Glass in the Garden show is an incredible event! The combination of glass art and the beautiful surroundings at Red Butte Garden create a stunning atmosphere. With more artists than ever participating this year, it’s bound to be a fantastic showcase of creativity. Plus, the opportunity to shop for unique gifts in such a lovely setting is a great bonus. We hope many people take the time to visit and enjoy the artistry!” said Diane Whittaker, the Glass Art Guild chairperson of this year’s Red Butte show.

What is warm glass or kiln-formed glass? Fused or warm glass is the oldest type of glass art known to man, but the least well known. Most historians believe that the first glass fusing and kiln casting was done by the ancient Mesopotamians in 2000 BC. Egyptians and Romans were the most prolific, and examples of their work can be viewed in museums around the world.
Heating glass in a kiln is the basis of warm glass art. The processes create a variety of different artistic and functional products based on a range of temperature work, such as fusing, slumping, and casting.
