SudShare, a Salt Lake-based startup lands $10M in seed funding

Salt Lake City— SudShare, the first and only nationwide marketplace for laundry, today announced it raised a $10M seed round and is expanding its service into an additional 100 cities, bringing the total number of cities with available service to 500. The funding round includes VC investments from Headline, Origin Ventures, Starting Line VC, Ludlow Ventures, and Clean Ventures, as well as notable angels Steven Galanis, Co-founder and CEO of Cameo,  Joanna Riley, CEO and co-founder of Censia, Rob Chesnut, former General Counsel for Airbnb, and Max Mullen, co-founder of Instacart. The financing will support additional market launches, product development and key hires.

Over 125 Million U.S. Households produce 50 pounds of non-stop laundry every week, ultimately spending an average of 13 billion hours and $75 billion dollars annually using their washer and dryer.

SudShare offers people the gift of time, while creating an opportunity for 53 million unskilled workers in the US the chance to work from home. Additionally, SudShare is benefitting from gig workers that are defecting from Uber, DoorDash, and other marketplaces, and enabling ‘covid-careful’ laborers who would prefer to not return to in-person settings as well as stay-at-home parents previously out of the labor force, to earn money while being able to care for young children or aging parents. In total, SudShare has over 70,000 Sudsters signed up servicing over 80,000 customers, with many earning several thousand dollars a month.

“There’s been no innovation in laundry since the washer and dryer almost a century ago,” says Mort Fertel, co-founder and CEO of SudShare. “SudShare is part of the do-it-for-me movement, where people outsource chores in order to free up time and enjoy life. SudShare was started because of one comment my wife made in 2017 home with five kids and buried in laundry. She said, ‘I can tap an app and get to the airport, Facetime someone on the other side of the world, but I’m still doing laundry like my grandmother.’ My 16-year-old son, Nachshon, was in the laundry room at the time and responded like a typical teenager, ‘I’m not helping you with the laundry, but I can solve this problem for you. I’ll build you an app.’ And he did. And SudShare was born. As we’ve scaled we’ve remained a family business with family values at our core, helping other families create more free time or work-from-home.”

“Laundry is one of life’s inevitabilities, but it’s a time-consuming, weekly task that diverts our attention away from other, more fulfilling parts of our lives. SudShare is changing that dynamic,” said Nicole Farb, Partner at Headline. “SudShare’s unique approach as a marketplace provides a new way for millions of households to get their time back by giving a cost-effective, on-demand solution to laundry. The growth they have experienced so far has been stellar, and we look forward to seeing how they continue to scale.”
