Utah Board of Pardons to receive comprehensive support from federal partnership

Salt Lake City—The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole (Board) is approved for a first-ever partnership with the Center for Effective Public Policy (CEPP) and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), a division of the U.S. Department of Justice, to provide essential technical assistance, resources, and training that will fortify the practices of the Board.

The partnership represents a significant step forward in enhancing the Board’s ability to make informed decisions and promote public safety throughout Utah. By leveraging the expertise and resources of both organizations, the initiative will have a lasting positive impact on Utahns and continues a history of recognized excellence in the state at a national level.

“We are known for continually identifying methods to improve our services on behalf of Utahns throughout the state,” said Jennifer Yim, administrative director at the Board. “This investment will ensure the Board is operating at the highest level with the latest information.”

Going forward, the Board will have access to a wide range of resources, including training and webinars, onsite and virtual technical assistance, self-assessment tools, relevant research and emerging strategies, peer networks and learning sites, and funding opportunities.

“Such resources will equip the Board with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance practices and decision-making processes,” said Yim.

Highlights include:

1. Technical Assistance: CEPP and BJA, leaders in criminal justice support, will provide targeted technical assistance to enhance decision-making processes within the Board.

2. Resource Enhancement: The collaboration introduces a comprehensive resource package, equipping the Board with tools, research, and emerging strategies necessary for informed and effective decision-making.

3. Training for Excellence: A series of training programs will be implemented, ensuring that all those associated with the Board continues to operate at the highest level of proficiency.

“This aligns with our mission to protect public safety through informed and just decisions that consider victim input, the accountability of those under our jurisdiction, risk reduction, and rehabilitation,” said Yim.

The initiative will begin February 2024.
