Stoel Rives names Mortensen Office managing partner in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City— Stoel Rives LLP, an Am Law 200 firm, today announced that David L. Mortensen has been named office managing partner of the firm’s Salt Lake City office. As office managing partner, Mortensen is responsible for the day-to-day management of the office and recruiting efforts to support the firm’s business in Utah. He will also oversee the move to soon-to-be-completed, new office space at 95 South State at City Creek, where Stoel Rives will be the anchor tenant.  In his new role, Mortensen succeeds D. Matthew Moscon, who has made the transition from office management to continue his active energy litigation practice.

“Mortensen is a highly skilled litigator who has been instrumental in building our reputation in the Salt Lake market. His history with the firm and deep knowledge of Utah and its key industries make him an ideal choice to lead our Salt Lake office as we focus on expansion,” said Melissa Jones, Stoel Rives’ Firm Managing Partner. “We thank Matt for his leadership in Salt Lake, particularly during the business and operational challenges brought on by the pandemic.”

Mortensen is partner in the Litigation practice group, with extensive experience in intellectual property as well as complex commercial litigation involving breach of contract, business torts, fraud, negligence and defamation. He also represents some of the largest cities in Utah and has litigated dozens of high-profile cases for individuals and companies, both in Utah and across the United States.  As a result of his years of experience, Mortensen has been recognized as one of “America’s Leading Lawyers for Business” (Utah) by Chambers USA (Litigation: General Commercial) and as a Mountain States Super Lawyer® (Business and Intellectual Property Litigation).  He received his J.D. from Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School.

“With the new office move, these are exciting times for Stoel Rives in Salt Lake City and I’m looking forward to leading our efforts to grow our business and recruit high-quality and diverse talent,” said Mortensen. “We have truly talented lawyers in Utah and the western United States, including the largest full-service firm-based IP practice in Utah. When I first joined Stoel Rives as a summer associate nearly 25 years ago, I was drawn to the Salt Lake office’s stellar reputation and the high caliber of attorneys. I am proud that the firm has maintained that commitment to hiring and retaining great lawyers and to providing outstanding legal services.”

As part of his responsibilities, Mortensen will oversee the firm’s move to new office space, currently under construction. He is leading the committee working with architect ZGF to design a modern, state-of-the-art office space that will support the needs of Stoel Rives’ team and clients. The move is expected to take place in April 2022.

Stoel Rives has one of the leading business law practices in Salt Lake City, with more than 60 attorneys working with regional and national clients through its corporate, finance, business litigation, environmental and natural resources, labor and employment, real estate, technology and intellectual property law practice groups.
