Walmart Raises More than $380,000 for Utah Food Bank
Salt Lake City—This morning, Salt Lake area Walmart associates and managers participated in a volunteer event to support Utah Food Bank. The event was held in honor of Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month, as well as to commemorate Walmart and Sam’s Club reaching their goal of securing over 1 billion charitable meals nationwide, during the life of their “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign which is held in partnership with Feeding America and 18 of Walmart’s supplier partners.
During the volunteer event, Walmart associates sorted food at Utah Food Bank in South Salt Lake and held a check presentation ceremony.
As part of the retailer’s “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign, which is now in its sixth year, Walmart and Sam’s Club customers, associates and suppliers raised $387,000 for Utah Food Bank. Since 2014, the campaign has helped secure more than 1 billion meals for Feeding America food banks nationwide.
“Utah Food Bank is incredibly grateful to Walmart for their long-term partnership in fighting hunger statewide,” said Ginette Bott, Utah Food Bank president and CEO. “This year’s record-breaking campaign raised over $387,000, which is equivalent to 1.4 million meals. This brings the 6-year campaign total to the equivalent of over 4.6 million meals to help the 382,000 Utahns who struggle with hunger.”
Hunger can affect individuals from all walks of life, but some populations are more at risk. In Utah, children are one of the most vulnerable groups to food insecurity. According to Feeding America, hungry children are more likely to be hospitalized and face higher risks of health conditions like anemia and asthma. As they grow up, kids struggling to get enough to eat are more likely to have problems in school and other social situations.
“We can do so much more for our communities when we work together. We’re grateful to our customers, associates, and suppliers for their generosity as we take action to fight hunger,” said Mathew Thomas, Walmart market manager for Salt Lake City Metro. “Utah Food Bank is doing a wonderful job bringing food to the people who need it most and we’re honored to be a part of their mission.”
In addition to the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign, the Walmart Foundation provides much-needed grants to local food banks and Walmart stores donate millions of pounds of food to food banks each year. This fiscal year, Walmart, Sam’s Club, and distribution center locations in Utah donated 9 million pounds of food to Feeding America food banks and affiliated pantries.
As Hunger Action Month comes to a close on September 30, Walmart and Feeding America want to remind everyone that every action counts in the fight against hunger. Individuals can take action today to help fight hunger in their communities by volunteering their time or donating to any of the 200 member food banks or 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that comprise the Feeding America network.
