It also has an equally rich worldwide fame for its skiing,” he says. “Skijoring combines those two worlds. It should be Utah’s sport, in my opinion.” With ambitions of expanding the circuit into a world championship, Gardner aims to elevate the sport to household fame and potentially establish it as an exhibition sport in Utah’s 2034 Winter Olympics.

Crafting stories with Stew Tribe of The Fold

Prinoth Husky Snow Groomer

“The ability to shape snow anywhere makes this an essential tool for transforming rodeo arenas into professional venues.”

TechnoAlpin snowmaking fan guns

“When Mother Nature needs a helping hand, these fan guns guarantee safe, consistent snow surfaces across multiple tour stops, extending our season and ensuring every athlete and horse competes on high-quality terrain.”

Incredible competitor athletes: Horse, rider and skier

“None of this would be possible without the remarkable athletes who bring skijoring to life. The company, which uses artificial intelligence to help 3PLs optimize operations and protect margins, has seen explosive growth — expanding its team by more than 600 percent from 2025 to 2026. Backed entirely by Utah investors Sorenson Capital, Kickstart and Peterson Ventures, DiversiFi has quickly outgrown five different downtown Salt Lake City offices in the past year alone as it builds technology for an industry projected to reach $2 trillion by 2030.

CEO Caleb Nelson, who founded the company after witnessing firsthand the challenges facing logistics providers, chatted with Utah Business about the funding round and DiversiFi’s plans to reshape how 3PLs operate.

What specific proof points or milestones convinced local capital that DiversiFi was ready for $8 million now, and how do you plan to deploy that capital over the next 12-18 months?

VCs have backed us because we have passed our “idea stage” and are now in full execution, providing value and solving pain for our customers. Some of the green flags for our VC partners were our traction, rapid revenue growth and our ability to stay laser-focused on executing quickly. The biggest proof was hearing from our actual early adopters and having them evangelize DiversiFi. Over the next 18 months, the focus will be on scaling our AI models and expanding our go-to-market team to help as many shippers across the country as possible. Our potential customers are stuck between a rock and a hard place, and nobody wants AI for AI’s sake. We’ve found a great way to use AI to improve their revenue while making it simple to use.

The 3PL industry is projected to reach roughly $2 trillion by 2030 and is known for tight margins and complex contracts. Where in that value chain are you focusing first, and what parts of the P&L are you moving the needle on most clearly today?

DiversiFi is focusing first on the operational finance layer within the 3PL — where shipments, carrier costs and customer contracts collide. That’s where margin leakage happens and where teams struggle to understand profitability in near real time. In a nutshell, we help 3PLs protect margins and scale without adding headcount. We created a way for 3PLs to leverage our AI to unlock more revenue in their businesses.

Many logistics operators already use WMS, TMS and ERP systems. What are you replacing or sitting on top of, and how do you position DiversiFi to skeptical operators who feel like they’ve “heard the visibility pitch” before?

The main issue is that 3PLs are swimming in data. They don’t need more visibility. They need direct execution in the areas that drive the most revenue. This includes sales, billing and how they process shipments. What’s amazing about building software with AI today is that you can connect multiple disparate systems together. We are not a WMS, TMS or ERP system that is a

“rip and replace” to 3PL’s current system, we are a connected layer that makes their systems smarter. We work on top of the systems they already have, enhancing — not replacing — their tech stack so they can build profitable businesses and deliver better results for their customers.

You’ve said DiversiFi was founded out of firsthand experience with “pain and imbalance” in logistics. What were the specific problems or unfair dynamics you saw 3PLs facing, and how does your product attempt to rebalance power between brands and their logistics partners?

Having spent 20+ years in transportation, I believe that 3PLs have one of the most complex jobs in logistics. 3PLs are expected to protect margins in an industry that gives them almost no visibility into where money is actually being made or lost. The industry is intentionally complex. With 150+ fees that the carrier can assess at any time, it’s difficult for them to get accurate data. This causes issues that go unaddressed and lost revenue. Basically, they act as a bank, and if they don’t manage it right, they end up floating cash and losing money on every shipment that goes out their door. DiversiFi connects its systems and, for the first time ever, allows them to talk to each other, turning that order flow into profit.

DiversiFi has moved offices five times in downtown Salt Lake to keep up with hiring. What have you learned about building and scaling a deeply technical AI company in Utah, and how does being locally capitalized and staffed shape your culture and strategy?

Scaling in Utah has taught us two things: First, the talent here is real — you can build a deeply technical AI company without being in the Bay Area, as long as you can zone out distractions and hone in on where you can deliver the most value to your customers.

Second, culture has to scale faster than headcount. When you grow quickly, clarity beats charisma. Focusing and simplifying while working hand in hand with early customers is needed completely.

Being locally capitalized and staffed shapes our culture in a great way. We build for the long term, stay close to customers and operate with discipline. It’s a very Utah mindset — humble, high-output and practical. And strategically, it keeps us focused on building a durable business with real product value, not just chasing hype. There is a lot of hype within AI, and customers are starting to get a good nose for it. Using AI in very specific use cases to provide real value is 100 percent there, and that’s what the market rewards.

Looking ahead, what does success look like in five years?

We’re working in the 3PL space to begin training our AI models so we can deliver those specific AI use cases to the masses. Our long-term goal is to be AI for shipping for all businesses.

Think of anything that was delivered to your doorstep lately. More than likely, it was delivered in a brown truck (UPS) or a purple and white truck (FedEx). For an industry as massive as parcel delivery, why is it ruled by only two carriers? We believe providerslike Amazon, DoorDash, Uber, Ontrac, etc. will be a major force in helping shippers have more choices for faster, lower-cost delivery, rather than a duopoly. What’s missing is a smart connector at the time of shipment that uses AI to route shipments to the right carrier. This is what we’re building for and where we are going.

2026 Leaders of the Year: Zach Wade

Mekenna Malan

I can walk out into my dining room any night of the week, and it’s busy, and people are smiling. It was the first time a Utah restaurant had made the cut in a whole decade.

He couldn’t fully acknowledge the designation until many hours later — after the last carpaccio was served and the restaurant’s pink-and-red neon ceiling lights powered down for the night. Months later, he’s still wrapping his head around it.

“We’re just keeping this thing running every day. It’s so busy. It’s a small restaurant,” says Wade, Cosmica’s owner and chef. “I run the restaurant every day. I cook every day. We’re just trying not to run out of bolognese.”

Originally from Massachusetts, Wade first visited Utah while taking an outdoor leadership course as a kid. When he and his business partner — renowned restaurateur and James Beard Award winner Zak Pelaccio — learned of the location for what would become Cosmica from a mutual friend, he jumped at the opportunity to take a break from the East Coast and serve simple, straightforward Italian food in an auspicious market.

“We feel really lucky to be part of this little community here,” Wade says. “We found a home amongst other businesses doing like-minded things. What T.F. Brewing is doing, Water Witch, Nohm, The Pearl, Central 9th Market — it’s a sweet little community that we’re really happy to be a part of. … We do something different than the other Italian restaurants here, but they’re all amazing. I eat at all of them. We just wanted to offer a different vibe.”

That vibe? It’s undeniably Instagrammable (see: the “spaghetti Western” interior design, the pink cowboy bathroom, the neon-lit dining room, and the portrait of Wade’s dog, Leo, that hangs over the bar). It’s no-fuss, well-executed Italian food. It’s the type of warm ambience that lures you in for a social aperitivo or a long, leisurely meal — if you can get a table, that is.

“This is what my partner and I signed up for. We’re just so happy that the restaurant has been this well-received,” Wade says of Cosmica’s booming popularity. “I can walk out into my dining room any night of the week, and it’s busy, and people are smiling. It’s such an amazing feeling.”

Looking to the future, Wade hopes to potentially expand his restaurant group into other states. But for now, Utah gets to claim his full attention — and for a food scene largely unacknowledged by out-of-state media (or, at best, recognized only by the hallmark items of green Jell-O and funeral potatoes), Cosmica’s achievement marks an entrance into a national conversation that’s long overdue. It’s an achievement best celebrated with some handmade pasta, maybe a glass of natural wine, and definitely an order of the House Puffy Bread with stracciatella and salted chilis alongside.

Zach Wade, owner of Cosmica, is pictured in his Salt Lake City restaurant on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025.

Crafting stories with Stew Tribe of The Fold

Mekenna Malan

Stew Tribe has the Midas touch. But a thriving business depends on more than its origin story, and that’s where Jonathan Kantor steps in. “[Tom] built an incredible brand with really good potential, but it wasn’t scaled up or professionalized,” Kantor says. With past experience at Burton, Oakley and Skullcandy, Kantor is no stranger to scaling and selling consumer brands. Now at Gozney as the dual chief revenue and marketing officer, Kantor is helping build a new category in outdoor cooking. “How do we create brand awareness on a scrappy budget?” Kantor asks. The answer lies in leveraging the brand’s strengths: storytelling, top-notch content and partnerships with the best chefs in the world (see: Matty Matheson, Brad Leone, Chris Bianco and many others). For Kantor, the vision is clear: bring pizza ovens to every backyard and redefine what outdoor cooking can be.

“The Daily Stoic” by Ryan Holiday

“Ryan Holiday takes the teachings of Stoicism and distills them into passages you can read in 30 seconds. To start my day, I wake up, work out and read ‘The Daily Stoic.’ … It’s like my form of meditation.”

Coffee and chia seed pudding from Hill’s Kitchen

“Hill’s Kitchen is my happy place, and they recently opened a new location three blocks away from our office. The coffee is the best around.”

On Cloudmonster running shoes

“Running is the single hour of each day that’s just for me. … The shoes make a massive difference. Good shoes prevent injuries and have a massive impact on your body.”

Opal

“In today’s world, we are all so distracted. This app allows you to choose what apps you block during the day and set time parameters.”

Gozney Dome (Gen 2)

“I recently upgraded to the Dome (Gen 2), our newest oven that launched this fall. It’s the most versatile oven we’ve made, has an insane amount of cooking space and is perfect for hosting large dinner parties. It’s used by some of the world’s best chefs and is the gold standard in backyard pizza ovens.”

Momentous supplements

“I take creatine, which is a life-changing supplement, every day. I first knew creatine as a bodybuilder supplement, but it’s actually more useful for your brain function than muscle building. I also take Omegas — everyone should be taking fish oil — and drink Momentous protein.”

Siggi’s Icelandic Yogurt

“Siggi’s is my afternoon snack. Yogurt is high in protein, satiates you and is healthier than other office snacks. I’ve replaced my afternoon M&M’s with yogurt.”

Re-Lyte Hydration

“Not all salts are created equal, and other trendy electrolytes don’t use good salt. LiquidIV has a bunch of sugar. You can’t compare the two.”

2025 Holiday gift guide

Mekenna Malan

This story appears in the November 2025 issue of Utah Business. Subscribe.

Shop local this holiday season! appointment of Brandi Hammon as its new president. Hammon, who previously served as Powder’s chief revenue officer, will now oversee all daily operations spanning resort development, real estate, hospitality and member experience. In her new role, she’ll work alongside CEO Reed Hastings to execute a long-term vision that balances growth with preserving the mountain’s authentic character. Hammon shared her vision for Powder Mountain’s future and reflected on her deep roots in Ogden Valley in a recent conversation.

The making of Deer Valley’s $2B East Village

You grew up in — and learned to ski in — Ogden Valley. How have your experiences in the area influenced your thinking about the spaces you’ll oversee in this role?

I moved to Ogden Valley at about 12 years old. The valley grounded me in the mountains. I’d already started skiing when I was much younger, as my dad built part of Snowbasin. My whole childhood was skiing until exhaustion, getting in the car and falling asleep. After school, we’d ski down the side of the road and ski all night at Nordic Valley. As I got older, I skied at Powder Mountain. Back then, you’d always have amazing snow consistently — we’re adding snowmaking now, which will be fun.

Powder is one of the last resorts that’s not crowded. Snowbasin, Park City, even Alta and Snowbird — the Epic and Ikon passes did one amazing thing by getting more people skiing, but on a Saturday morning, it’s overwhelming. We have an opportunity at Powder to turn the model. We have tons of land, can invest in real estate infrastructure, and still give the same ski experience we had in the 1980s.

At Mountain Luxury Real Estate and Lodging, you built a successful real estate business with over $1 billion in sales. How will you apply those entrepreneurial skills to the broader operations of Powder Mountain and Powder Haven?

My business has been in Ogden Valley, mostly Huntsville, Eden and Liberty. I have a good feel for the kind of person who comes to the valley and what drives prices there. When I first started Mountain Luxury around 2005, there wasn’t a house sold over a million dollars.

I’ve also owned a construction company, a restaurant and bought a lodging company. I’m good at multi-use spaces — how do you take lower volume and make it profitable over the long term? How do you have the same space produce different things at different times?

The entrepreneurial side is showing newcomers the authentic parts of the community. You walk into almost any community in America today, and there’s a Walmart, Starbucks, Applebee’s, Target — they’ve all been laid out the same. When you come to Ogden Valley and Powder, you see we haven’t done that.

How are you approaching the balance of managing growth while preserving the authenticity of the area?

I was part of the incorporation process for Ogden Valley. I also served on the land trust for several years and have conserved some ranches. That work is near and dear to my heart. So, how to do less development, get a higher return and honor what works for the community?

A couple things matter to me: First, Powder stays a public ski resort. Taking that away from the community is an absolute loss. Second, it can’t become a big mega-resort — that would change the fabric of the valley immensely.

“We’re not planning for a 2-year or 5-year flip or maximizing pass revenue. We’re planning how to make this resort work for 100 years.”

Reed Hastings has a passion for the mountain and doesn’t need to maximize return. He just wants to do a great job. Not every decision we make will make everybody happy, but we’re going to have public trails and a public ski resort. We’ll minimize development so it never risks becoming a mega-resort. We’re not planning for a 2-year or 5-year flip or maximizing pass revenue. We’re planning how to make this resort work for 100 years. We bought additional land to expand the private side. We sold out Phase 1 with the first 40 lots, keeping it in an area the community agrees density should be.

Someone asked what keeps me up at night. Losing public access keeps me up. Reed has promised that preserving it is something he’s all about. We’re not traditional “churn and burn” developers. There’s a lot of heart and thought that goes into what we’re putting, where we’re putting it and how we’re doing it.

What lessons from your experience as chief revenue officer of Powder will inform your strategy as president?

I’ve always grown all my businesses from the ground up, so I love getting in and knowing everything from washing dishes to how the software runs. As chief revenue officer, I built out the program for our lot sales — how we laid out the lots, wrote the design guidelines and did the pricing structure. I was responsible if we didn’t sell out.

I’ve always known who the buyer is in the valley. I’ve communicated with buyers and done the sales cycle with them. I grew a whole team in those two years, and we built everything from scratch. I got to work with Reed one-on-one, and once he figured out that I knew what I was doing, he let me run with it. Now I get to take his style and use him as a coach, too.

We also added a private club component while trying to keep it down to earth. We’re like your chill, fun private club. If you don’t care that everybody knows you’re a billionaire, we’re your place. If you don’t want your kids to feel entitled and you want them to know how to carry their own skis, if you’re okay with hooting and hollering and having fun — that’s Powder Haven.

What challenges or opportunities do you anticipate in the broader ski industry over the next decade, and how is Powder positioning itself in that landscape?

Season pass sales are down for Vail Resorts this year. Their revenue isn’t down as much as their pass sales, but they’ve found a tipping point where crowds are saying, “This isn’t the experience we want.” I see us being able to slide in on some of that.

The other challenge is staffing. You had protests by ski patrollers — rightfully so. We made a massive pivot last year, spending an extra $3 million in payroll. I believe we’re the top-paying ski resort in the state. We want the best people — curious, hardworking, kind people. Our staff makes or breaks a resort, and we’re fortunate to have made that pivot early.

Transportation and housing are other issues. We’re fortunate to be so close to population centers. Places like Jackson Hole and Big Sky — it’s hard for people to afford to live there. We spun up a whole shuttle system last year, which was a huge expense but a great investment.

How do you plan to collaborate with Reed, who will remain CEO, to advance the long-term vision of Powder Mountain and Powder Haven?

Reed is a passion guy. It’s beautiful working with someone who puts doing the right thing first. When I took the job, I said, “Reed, I will not take this job if you ever make me doubt my integrity.” Over these last two years, we’ve been so aligned. He’s more concerned about keeping his word than making extra money. As CEO, he’ll stay involved in all the big stuff. He’s passionate about Powder being successful and having the longevity of a beautiful, public-private resort. He loves the challenge and shaking things up. He’s also a snowboarder, and he’s excited to get his 100 days this year!

It’s fun because the sky’s kind of the limit. I have a massive list, and we prioritize by biggest impact, what’s executable, what has longevity and what will appeal to the most people. The big thing is finding ways to preserve it in perpetuity. We’re doing something different with the public-private model, and I think it will benefit the public side. I’m excited to prove that it’s going to work and, most importantly, get it deeded so people can have confidence it’ll stay public forever.

Revitalizing retail with Julissa Breslin

Meet Utah’s Most Influential Women of 2025

Catherine Bennett, Mekenna Malan, Kenzie Koehle

This story appears in the August 2025 issue of Utah Business. Subscribe.

This year’s Most Influential Women are transcending expectations across diverse fields to sculpt the future of our state. Each pod combines algae-based treatment, renewable energy and advanced filtration to deliver clean water, reduce carbon emissions and process waste into valuable byproducts like biochar. Cities can expand capacity as needed without decades of debt or inflexible systems. Airbuild works directly with local governments to create immediate community benefits, generating construction, logistics and operations jobs while helping cities meet regulatory compliance, carbon reduction targets and sustainability goals. By aligning wastewater treatment with climate action, Airbuild enables municipalities to turn essential services into engines for environmental and economic progress, building cleaner, more resilient communities.

Altris Energy

altr.is

Altris — short for “Altruistic Solutions” — is a tech aggregator, R&D and commercialization company developing affordable, sustainable power and water solutions. The company stacks technologies to increase efficiency while reducing costs for utilities, industry and communities. Its portfolio includes advanced clean power generation, low-cost hydrogen production, water treatment, next-generation nuclear applications, and biochar and graphene production. The Utah-based company has secured contracts, partners and manufacturing pathways for scale. Altris aligns innovation with pragmatic execution to make clean power and water reliable, affordable and abundant, helping lead Utah’s energy transition with solutions designed for impact at utility and human scale.

Amy M. Hansen

Sustainability Program Manager | Swire Water

swirewater.com

Amy Hansen leads environmental stewardship and community engagement initiatives as part of Swire Water’s sustainability team. She tracks resource use and greenhouse gas emissions supporting decarbonization goals, develops employee sustainability training and organizes major outreach events, including trail cleanups with the Jordan River Commission and conservation at Tracy Aviary Pia Okwai Preserve. Under her leadership in 2024, Swire Water employees contributed over 2,024 service hours, with 2,025 hours planned for 2025. Hansen’s efforts have helped the company exceed outreach goals tenfold, serving over 7,000 people in South America, Africa and India through the employee-matched Community THRIVE Fund, which provides clean water, food and hygiene care to underserved communities.

Beehive Cheese

beehivecheese.com

In 2005, Tim Welsh and Pat Ford had a vision of opening a creamery in the mountains of Northern Utah. With family support, the two broke from tradition and created their own rules about what artisan cheese could be — building a company grounded in independent thinking, connectedness and authenticity. Now a certified B Corporation, Beehive Cheese continues to produce award-winning cheeses that bring family and friends together.

ECO Green Equipment

ecogreenequipment.com

ECO Green Equipment designs, manufactures and installs advanced recycling equipment for scrap tires, plastics, e-waste, wood, textiles, municipal solid waste and biomass. The Salt Lake City-based company provides custom-engineered, turnkey recycling systems worldwide, delivering solutions for tire-derived products, alternative fuels and other recycled materials. With installations across the U.S., Europe, South America, the Middle East and Asia, each system is tailored to meet diverse operational, environmental and economic needs. ECO Green’s multicultural management team supports customers globally, focusing on providing recycling solutions for customer success.

Fairmat

fairmat.tech

Fairmat, a French deep-tech company founded in 2020 by Benjamin Saada, specializes in recycling carbon fiber composites. The company uses proprietary robotic and AI-driven technologies to transform carbon fiber waste into high-performance, second-generation material, preventing landfill disposal or incineration. Fairmat recently established its first U.S. facility in Salt Lake City — a 15,000-square-foot recycling plant and office strategically located near Utah’s carbon fiber production hub. The expansion followed collaborations with the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity and the Utah Advanced Materials Manufacturing Initiative. Fairmat’s 10-year partnership with Hexcel Corporation allows it to recycle carbon fiber composite scrap from Hexcel’s Salt Lake City manufacturing facility. This collaboration strengthens Utah’s advanced manufacturing supply chain while creating high-quality jobs and supporting the state’s environmental and economic development goals.

Fred Bonney

Co-Owner | Great Salt Lake Recycling

gslrecycling.com

Fred Bonney brings diverse expertise to tire recycling. With degrees in education from Brigham Young University and anthropology and development education from Stanford University, plus Peace Corps experience, Bonney has worked as a welder, purchasing agent, diesel mechanic and field engineer. His entrepreneurial background includes founding several recycling businesses, including a successful tire recycling company that processed 1.5 million tires annually. He also co-founded a pipe fabrication company serving the mining industry. Bonney’s commitment to transforming tires into environmentally friendly products drives Great Salt Lake Recycling’s mission to become the region’s premier tire recycling operation.

Hawx Pest Control

hawxpestcontrol.com

Hawx Pest Control implements comprehensive sustainability practices through reforestation, pollinator protection, fleet hybridization and operational efficiency. Through One Tree Planted, Hawx plants a tree for every new customer, with over 45,000 trees planted so far. The company supports the Save Our Bees campaign, recognizing the importance of pollinators for food production and biodiversity. More than half of Hawx’s fleet uses hybrid vehicles, with algorithmic route planning further reducing fuel consumption. Internally, Hawx has consolidated its headquarters into one building, cutting energy use while enhancing collaboration. Remote work options reduce commuting emissions while improving employee well-being.

Kyller Barrus

Materials Manager | WesTech, Swire Water

swirewater.com

Kyller Barrus has been with WesTech for over 17 years, where he has consistently been a voice for positive change within warehouse operations. As warehouse operations manager, he has played a key role in helping the operation achieve over 60 percent waste diversion from landfill by supporting the development and implementation of wood pallet recycling, cardboard reuse and metal recycling programs across warehouse and shipping/receiving operations. Miller

Attorney and HR leader

What specific changes have you implemented that have most effectively fostered workplace belonging and work-life balance?

Early in my legal career, I had access to leaders who thought about employees. The CEO of JB’s Restaurants was one of them. JB’s was a company with thousands of employees who had the words “Success Follows When People Come First” in large letters in the lobby of the main office. The CEO gave me the opportunity to work with him to identify what was best for employees, even when we sold the company.

I have been supportive of making sure employees who may work less than full-time are respected, valued and treated as professionals. Teaching executives and leaders — especially those in my age group — that people can work less than full-time and still provide critical contributions is important. Leaders also need to be aware that there are lots of different types of families, and all types need to feel valued, whether it is at a company picnic or in the benefits provided.

The Utah State Bar regularly presents a mentorship award in your name. What does this recognition mean to you?

In various roles, I have worked to make sure women and people of color have access to opportunities. I have made a concerted, intentional effort to invite people to apply for positions, to join committees, and to participate in activities when I see that people may be holding back and are hesitant to participate. When you host a party and you see someone alone in the corner or about to leave because they don’t know anyone, you reach out and talk with them and make them feel welcome. As an attorney, an executive and a leader, I have taken the approach that I am responsible for paying attention to and seeing who is not participating and may not feel welcome. When I took the opportunity to reach out, sometimes it resulted in a dear friendship. Sometimes, the organization has more active participants or a new, great leader. I have benefited greatly from teachers and people in the legal and business communities who care about me and have suggested participation.

You have supported formerly incarcerated single mothers interested in working in the legal industry. How did you offer that help?

In some instances, I have provided a place for them to live. I assisted a woman who had a serious alcohol problem, an abusive husband and three small children by enabling her to take time off from work, assisting in care for her children, and letting her know that she could not do anything that would result in my abandoning her. In some instances, my support has included my expertise as a lawyer, but most of the support was in the form of human kindness and relying on my own village of friends to participate in that support.

How do you balance professional expertise with personal involvement when advocating for those who need legal support?

Both CEOs and people with no resources may argue about or reject my legal advice. I communicate the options available to them and the possible consequences. That is separate from being their friend or colleague.

Charlotte Miller

Erin Laney Barr

Catherine Bennett, Mekenna Malan, Kenzie Koehle

No person works ‘for’ me. We work together. If anything, I am here to work for them, to make sure they are learning, growing and given the tools to go above and beyond.

Erin Laney Barr

Managing Director & Market Leader	| CBRE

LinkedIn

What leadership principles guide your talent development, and how have you worked to create a more inclusive commercial real estate industry?

People first and always is a guiding light for me in this work — not only the people I work with at CBRE (over 140,000 worldwide), but our clients, our business colleagues and the communities we impact. We are nothing without all the people that make what we do possible. No person works “for” me. We work together. If anything, I am here to work for them, to make sure they are learning, growing and given the tools to go above and beyond.

During your time with the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, you helped attract companies like Goldman Sachs, Boeing, and Adobe to the state. What makes Utah competitive for these high-value employers?

So many factors go into a company’s decision to relocate and expand into a new area. At the end of the day, companies want to be in a place where they are valued. Distilling it down further, companies want their people to be valued. Then, the company will be seen as a place where people want to work. Therefore, they will contribute to the company’s goals and mission. Again, people first. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t point out that it has to make good business sense for a company to make a relocation decision. If the policy environment is such that they don’t feel supported, heard and welcomed into a growth-friendly environment, they’ll have a hard time choosing Utah.

Which initiatives have you been involved in that have been most impactful?

As a member of the Utah Rising Steering Committee, you’re helping shape the state’s future development. What vision do you have for balancing economic growth with quality of life considerations, particularly as it relates to commercial real estate development?

I believe that we need a true consensus on what growth looks like going forward. Growth is inevitable.

I understand when people are afraid to lose what makes Utah great. I feel the same way. I want my son to experience all the wonderful reasons I decided to return to Utah after 10 years away. However, if we aren’t proactive in finding solutions together, the change will come, we won’t be prepared and we will all pay the price. I think of cities like Seattle, Denver and Austin. All places that have seen tremendous growth. Each of these cities has faced considerable headwinds because there wasn’t a consensus in city planning, infrastructure development and water needs.

We’ve all heard the “Team Utah” mantra over the last decade, and when it is working, it makes us unstoppable, while ensuring we keep all the things that make Utah so special. However, if any one person, organization, or personal agenda becomes the loudest voice in the room, we’ll all lose.

Erin Laney Barr

Tori A. Baker

CEO & President | Salt Lake Film Society

LinkedIn

What did you hope to accomplish when you founded MAST Studio?

The idea first sparked during my work with Goldman Sachs’ 10,000 Small Businesses program, where I recognized a gap: Utah was producing world-class animators, but we were losing them to out-of-state opportunities. MAST is designed to close that gap by transforming artists into artist-entrepreneurs. We provide mentorship and hands-on experience in every facet of animation — from cutting-edge VR technology to personal branding and business modeling — so participants leave not just as creators, but as sustainable small-business owners in their own right.

You’ve played a crucial role in preserving and restoring the Tower Theater. How do you envision the theater serving the community for the next century?

The Tower Theatre: Next 100 Years Project is more than a renovation: it’s a cultural investment in Salt Lake City’s future. Our vision is to restore this beloved neighborhood landmark within its historical context while transforming it into the world’s first freestanding International Living Building cinema — a model of environmental sustainability, water stewardship and community resilience. The Tower Theatre: Next 200 Years Project will put the Tower on the international stage of cinematic exhibition, integrating new technologies in film presentation and programming to ensure its relevance for generations.

How has the Arthouse+ platform transformed or expanded the reach of arthouse cinemas in your network?

When the pandemic hit, arthouse cinemas across the country suddenly lost their ability to connect films with audiences. My entrepreneurial background pushed me to innovate, and that’s how Arthouse+ was born. We partnered with more than 25 distributors and 30 arthouse cinemas nationwide to create a virtual theatrical release window for independent films. … When theaters reopened, we didn’t sunset the technology — we evolved it. Arthouse+ became the R&D foundation for a next-generation POS system designed to integrate ticketing, donor relations and loyalty programs, addressing challenges unique to nonprofit cinemas. That R&D is nearly complete, and the Salt Lake Film Society (SLFS) board will collaborate with me and the other founder, Miles Romney, on determining the future for this technology. … Our vision is to eventually provide it as a no-cost solution for other 501(c)(3) arthouse theaters, helping them reduce operating expenses and strengthening the entire independent cinema ecosystem.

You have been instrumental in many national initiatives. What is your vision for these initiatives, and how do they align with your goals for SLFS?

I’ve always believed that local impact and national advocacy are deeply connected. I helped found the National Art House Convergence, which grew into the largest gathering of independent cinema professionals in North America. Serving on the Cinema Foundation board has given me a platform to advocate for both Utah and the national arthouse community. … Our partnerships with AMC on the TV-to-big-screen project, as well as the cultural film festivals I founded at SLFS — FILMéxico and Masima (the first Pacific Island film festival in the U.S.) — reflect my ongoing commitment to expanding access, diversifying programming, and ensuring that independent cinema remains both artistically and economically viable. Work is personal even when it’s business.

Heather Brace

Chief People Officer | Intermountain Health

LinkedIn

You have led organizational redesigns of system functions to create a more aligned care model for 68,000 employees across six states. What leadership principles guided this transformation and how do you measure its success?

My leadership principles are centered around three core beliefs: clarity of purpose, courage in change and a deep sense of care for people. As we have designed every aspect of the transformation to our mission of helping people live their healthiest lives possible, this has required us to define what success looks like, not just in operational metrics, but in how people experience work. I try to remember that everything we do in the workplace becomes a dinnertime conversation for the employees we serve. Work is personal even when it’s business. I am appreciative of my lens of being an employee at Intermountain for 25 years and growing up in the system.

How does your work with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign influence your work in healthcare leadership?

My leadership in the Go Red for Women campaign is deeply personal. Heart disease has affected both women and men in my family. Watching their experiences has shaped not just my awareness of cardiovascular health, but also my understanding of how often women’s symptoms are dismissed or misdiagnosed. That emotional connection fuels my sense of urgency and responsibility.

This campaign isn’t just about awareness; it’s also about legacy. For me, it’s a chance to ensure that the next generation of women — my nieces, my friends, my colleagues and my future grandchildren — know their risks, speak up and feel heard. It’s also a reminder that leadership isn’t just professional, it’s profoundly personal. In my leadership legacy, I want to be remembered for closing gaps in care, opportunity and voice.

You have balanced many community commitments over the years with a demanding job. How do you approach prioritizing these commitments?

As a leader, I try to model the idea that you can lead well and live well. I want others to see that community involvement isn’t a distraction from leadership; it is a reflection of it. Also, taking care of your own well-being is not a luxury; it is a responsibility. At the end of the day, I try to keep my priorities simple: do work that matters, stay grounded in who I am, and leave things better than I found them.

Having worked your way up through Intermountain Health over your 25-year career, what insights have you gained about developing talent and creating pathways for advancement?

Having grown up inside this organization, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing first-hand what it means to be seen, developed and believed in. That is something I will never forget. One of my biggest insights is that talent doesn’t always look like a polished resume or a linear career. Often, the best potential is sitting one layer deeper, waiting for someone to notice. People cannot advance into what they cannot see. We need to be intentional about surfacing pathways, demystifying leadership and making it clear how someone grows in our organization.

Heather Brace

Bianca Collings

Catherine Bennett, Mekenna Malan, Kenzie Koehle

Leadership doesn’t require the ‘right’ background. It takes vision, trust in your instincts and a willingness to do things differently.

Bianca Collings

EVP, Marketing | Lumea

LinkedIn

What unique marketing approaches have been most effective in the specialized medical technology space?

When I stepped into my role at Lumea, I didn’t come from a traditional healthcare or medtech background, … but what seemed like a disadvantage at first ultimately became one of our greatest assets. It allowed me to bring a fresh perspective to an industry that is largely made up of insiders. Instead of relying on the typical playbook, such as digital ads or pay-to-play campaigns, we leaned into authenticity and credibility. … We laid a deep SEO foundation, launched a podcast, built a digital magazine and founded an industry summit that now brings together thought leaders from across the globe.

What leadership principles did you learn by successfully producing Lumea’s first Digital Diagnostic Summit that you’re applying to future initiatives?

Most events in this space follow the same formula — same speakers, same venues, same structure. We wanted to do something different. Alongside our head of sales, we created a summit that reflected the innovation we talk about. … That first summit helped put Lumea on the map, and it’s now considered one of the top three events in our space. The biggest lesson I’ve taken from the experience is that leadership doesn’t require the “right” background. It takes vision, trust in your instincts and a willingness to do things differently.

Your students at Utah Valley University consistently praise your ability to connect classroom learning with real-world marketing applications. How do you balance your roles as both an industry executive and an educator, and how does each role inform the other?

My harp teacher, in particular, shaped how I think about learning. Starting at age six, every lesson was recorded on an old-school tape recorder, long before that kind of self-review was common. I had to listen back, evaluate my own performance, and come to the next lesson prepared to explain where I needed to improve. She put me on national stages as a soloist and ensemble member from a very young age — not for prestige, but because she believed the only way to really learn was to apply what you knew in the real world. If your knowledge stays locked in the studio, you haven’t really learned it. That mindset is what I try to pass on to my students.

What challenges have you faced, and what strategies would you recommend to companies looking to develop and retain more women in leadership positions?

As a mother of five and an executive in a mission-driven tech company, I’ve constantly worked to give both roles the energy and presence they deserve. The pressure to “do it all” is real, and while the struggle is often framed as external, for me it has been deeply internal. … I’ve been lucky to work with leadership teams who did not just allow flexibility, they encouraged it. They trusted that the work would get done and understood that supporting personal priorities builds stronger teams. Today, half of my marketing team are working mothers, many with young children. They treat time like a superpower and bring unmatched focus, resilience and creativity. My mission now is to help more women do what I helped my own kids do: uncover their strengths, reignite their passion, and connect it to the right opportunity.

Bianca Collings
