Salt Lake City — Rocky Mountain Power, in partnership with Nexant, is leading a new Advanced Rooftop Control (ARC) class in conjunction with Salt Lake Community College Energy Institute.

The class was developed and taught by Nexant Engineer Chris Cox and funded by Rocky Mountain Power. Commercial HVAC Rooftop Units and Advanced Rooftop Controls carry significant energy-saving potential that presents high-efficiency opportunities for businesses.

Many utilities have taken note and promoted energy programs with incentives to encourage participation. These programs have been validated by the industry as rapidly growing in the fields of energy efficiency and alternative energy, as well as critical to electric power infrastructure and building management.

The team worked to secure donations that would help train directly in the technology including commercial rooftop HVAC units, advanced rooftop control systems, economizers, and lab space, to learn about ARC. The result was three fully functioning systems, which enabled vendors to have a both hands-on and beneficial experience. At the training, representatives from Honeywell, Johnson Controls, Control Equipment Company, and Transformative Wave were on hand to train the class on their specific equipment. The class was offered at SLCC’s Building Automation lab. Plans to film the class are in development and SLCC has plans to offer online training in Advanced Rooftop Controls for continuing education credit for HVAC Contractors through SLCC’s Workforce Training and Continuing Education.

The Energy Institute at Salt Lake Community College works closely with the industry to ensure that the career training they provide in energy efficiency stays current with new technologies and provides students the tools that are in demand by employers. As a founding member of our Program Advisory Committee, Rocky Mountain Power has been a partner of the Energy Institute for 10+ years. In addition to industry knowledge, RMP has also provided internships for our students, tours to provide students with field experience and instructors who teach students the business case for energy efficiency.
