Felons Generating Over $85,000 A Month In Revenue Open Their Second Thrift Boutique

Salt Lake City— The Other Side Thrift Boutique opens its second location at 3320 S 1300 E in Millcreek and will celebrate with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Monday, February 10th, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Many have said that The Other Side Thrift Boutique at 4290 S State Street in Murray is “the Nordstrom of Thrift Boutiques.” The store is impeccably decorated. The service is world class. Customers come from as far as Wyoming and Idaho to shop there. And all of it is managed and run by former criminals and convicted felons.

They take your gently used goods, clean them up and display them in a way that makes you second guess that you’re really in a thrift store.

All employees at The Other Side Thrift Boutique are students at The Other Side Academy.

The Other Side Academy is a 30 month residential life-skills and vocational training program for men and women with long histories of criminal behavior, drug addiction, and homelessness. The average student has been arrested 25 times. Students pay nothing to attend and the non-profit does not take any government funds for operations.

This is how they do it. The Thrift Boutique’s slogan is “You save money. We save lives.” Over 25 students of The Other Side Academy work at the Boutique doing everything from managing the warehouse, serving customers, and delivering purchases. Every dollar generated goes back into the Academy to help save another student’s life. “Most of our students come from such broken lives that they will never make sense of their past. All they can do is create a new future – one where they care about and serve others,” says the Academy’s Sierra Belka. “That’s what you see happening at the Boutique. We love nothing more than working miracles for our customers.”

The quality of both goods and service have made The Other Side Thrift Boutique a million dollar business in the past two years. But success is about changing lives, not just making money. According to Jesse Goertzen, a master student and Crew Boss at the Boutique, “Our new drug is helping the next person, it’s our new high. The Other Side Academy is completely self-reliant. Who would have thought that 100 felons could support themselves by running world-class businesses? But that’s what’s happening here. We learn to respect ourselves by doing things that give us self-respect. This store lets us learn pride in our work and service for others.”
