Our Commitment to You

by Sarah Ryther Francom

09 February 2012—

There’s no denying that 2009 was an extremely difficult year for Utah’s business community—to say the least. Arguably every business regardless of location or industry felt the economic punch, and some were completely knocked down by it.

But there are some positives in the economic turmoil we’ve all been hit with. For one thing, it’s grounding us in a good way.

One of the most common phrases that I’ve heard—and I’m sure you’ve heard—since the economic struggle began is: “It’s time to get back to the basics.”

For financial institutions, that phrase has meant lending to only those who really qualify to receive a loan. For the construction industry, it has meant building when there’s demand. For many businesses, it has meant scrapping the original business plan and starting over.

Regardless of your industry, company size or location, getting back to the basics has likely included reevaluating your company’s current situation and reprioritizing your company’s goals.

At Utah Business magazine, we’re also reevaluating and reprioritizing. But one thing that will always remain is our commitment to you, our readers. Our editorial goal is to provide you with meaningful, compelling and educational articles that will keep you on top of what’s happening in Utah’s business community and will help you make educated decisions about your business.

In our efforts to enhance our editorial content, we are excited to introduce two new sections that will have a permanent spot in Utah Business: By the Books and Lessons Learned.

Directly following Around Utah, the new By the Books section includes a business book review written by a Utah executive. So before you pick up the latest best seller, hear what your peers have to say about it.

In Lessons Learned, we dissect real business problems taken directly from Utah companies. Each Lessons Learned article will include a different company experiencing a different problem. Our expert will go be behind the scenes, offer solutions and report the outcome. We hope you’ll be able to apply the lessons learned in each article when making decisions about your business.

We’re also excited to present our annual Legal Elite list in this issue. Although this recognition program is not new, we have made some changes to our selection process to enhance the list’s value. Read about our new selection process on page 60, and make sure to read about Utah’s Legal Elite in the pages that follow.

We strive to make each issue of Utah Business meaningful, compelling and educational, and that is our commitment to you. If ever you feel that we’re not meeting this commitment, we want to know about it. We welcome comments, suggestions and criticisms.
