07 February 2012—

Michael Baker Jr., Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker Corporation has been selected as the lead engineering team on three design/build bridge replacement/rehabilitation projects awarded by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT). The total construction value of the contracts is approximately $13 million, while Baker’s bridge and highway design fee is $1.1 million. All three projects are being funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

The three projects include six deck replacements on Interstate 15 bridges near Payson, the replacement of Interstate 80 over Echo Junction bridges in Summit County, and the replacement of Interstate 80 over 2300 East bridges in Salt Lake City.

All three projects will employ Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods which involve precast bridge design elements and construction of the new structure near the existing bridge. The Echo Junction and 2300 East bridges will be replaced by sliding the new bridges into place over a 16-hour period, while the Payson deck replacements will use precast deck panels and replace the decks one half at a time while keeping the other half open. Baker will team with Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction on all three projects, with the work to be completed by November 2009.

“Baker has gained considerable experience in ABC design in Utah on the 4500 South and 3300 South replacement projects, and these new projects further establish us as a leader in bridge design and design/build in the state,” said Baker’s Michael Arens, project manager. He added that, “We are helping UDOT maximize its appropriated ARRA funds by being able to respond to these design/build projects, and expanding the size of our bridge design group in our Utah office.”
