West Valley City Receives National Award

West Valley City was awarded as a National Leader for its National Night Out efforts during 2012. This will be the ninth consecutive year West Valley City’s National Night Out program has earned the recognition of the National Association of Town Watch as a National Leader of communities with populations between 100,000-299,000. The City was ranked 13th among the 27 receiving recognition in this category.

West Valley City has been participating in National Night Out since it first began 29 years ago. In 2012 it is estimated that more than 8,000 residents attended the 34 neighborhood block parties, 4 City-sponsored safety fairs, and 15 neighborhood watch meetings and trainings during the month of August. While many communities in Utah participate, West Valley City is the only community to receive this recognition. According to the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out 2012 involved 37.5 million people in more than 15,700 communities from all 50 states.

“National Night Out is a wonderful tradition for our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Mike Winder. “The event helps to build unity in our community by providing opportunities for neighbors to meet one another.”

National Night Out is designed to:

• Heighten crime prevention awareness
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back
