Weber State University had its ribbon cutting open house and flag ceremony for its newly remodeled facility on May 24, 2012. The Center for Continuing Education is a valuable addition to the community and has been established to provide professional development courses as well as law enforcement academy programs. This newly renovated adult education center is located at 775 S. University Park Blvd., Clearfield, Utah.
“Our ongoing goal is to provide comprehensive, quality education for the people working or residing in this area,” says Bruce Davis, vice provost and dean of WSU Continuing Education. “This new facility better supports our initiative to provide Hill Air Force Base and local business and industry, particularly aerospace and defense companies, with their ongoing professional business training. This location, directly across the street from Hill Air Force Base, is a great advantage.”
The facility has capacity for 220 students and is shared by two components. The larger part houses administrative offices and technology enhanced classrooms with access to audio/visual equipment by the instructors. The facility includes a 75- seat classroom/assembly area, a distance learning classroom with interactive video conferencing capabilities, and a 40-person computer lab, where computer monitors can retract into desks, so students may also read or take notes during instruction.
The second part is a dedicated, full-service, police-training academy with a defensive tactics practice room, and locker rooms with showers. Support spaces include a large upper lobby for student breaks and interaction, a staff break room, staff workroom, counseling offices, a large conference room, and a reception lobby designed with WSU colors.
The interior architectural design by local Salt Lake City Firm ‑ Eaton Architecture, was carefully considered for efficiency and functionality within the existing building envelope. The main challenge was meeting the time line of four months for design and construction. Contractor, Valley Design and Construction of Layton, Utah, assisted in building a refreshing, airy environment conducive for adult study that utilizes modernized elements for today’s business.
