Salt Lake City – The Utah Technology Council (UTC) has posted the hottest 50 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs for Utah in 2014 as part of the organization’s effort to realign Utah’s education system to focus on preparing students for high-paying STEM jobs.
The 2014 list can be accessed at the UTC’s Website here: http://www.utahtech.org/pdf files/stem/utah_top_50_stem_final12414.pdf">http://www.utahtech.org/pdf percent20files/stem/utah_top_50_stem_final12414.pdf
“Individuals don’t just fall into a STEM career,” said Richard R. Nelson, president and CEO of the UTC. “Education for a STEM career needs to start in kindergarten and be reinforced throughout a student’s education.”
The STEM jobs list uses three areas to rank STEM careers: short-term projected growth rate, current job openings, and compensation (both hourly and annually). The main goal UTC hopes to achieve with the annual hot jobs list is to provide assistance for secondary education and post-secondary education students and career counselors to help students inclined toward STEM careers to get and stay on the appropriate career path early in their education.
“The dedicated counselors of our educational system are extremely overworked,” said Nelson. “This list provides them with 50 very specific jobs that will enable them to more easily place students on a STEM education track, unlike the vague, nebulous job lists they’ve had access to in the past.”
