On Nov. 10, Utah Marines will celebrate the 273rd anniversary of the founding of the United States Marine Corps in 1775. At the beginning of the 1800s, the Marine Corps consisted of 343 enlisted marines and 25 officers. As of 2010, the Marine Corps has grown to 182,945 enlisted and 21,208 officers.
In addition to serving in every major war and other conflicts, the Marines Corps in Utah continues to take an active role in the community by assisting with local charities. Currently the Marine Corps Reserves and several local Marine Corps leagues are involved with the Toys for Tots foundation, collecting toys to help families across the United States.
Those celebrating are the veterans, active members, reserves and detachments in Utah: Fox Company, 2nd Battalion 23rd Marines; Marines Stationed at Camp W. G. Williams; Deion Stephenson Detachment #1014; Lt Serge B. Simmons Detachment #1159; Price Utah Detachment #515; Sgt. Rodney M. Davis Detachment # 1251; Utah Dixie Detachment # 1270; Wasatch Detachment # 1291; Cedar City Detachment # 1315; Utah West Detachment # 1332; and Cpl Gerald Max Rich Detachment #1352.
If you would like to make a donation to support wounded Marine veterans and their families, please contact the Wounded Warrior Regiment at: www.woundedwarriorregiment.org.
