Salt Lake Power Yoga: Bringing the Heat Since 2012

Readers’ Choice,as selected by Utah Business Facebook fans.

Each month, we ask our Facebook fans to nominate their favorite Utah-owned businesses and select one to feature here. This month we asked fans to tell us their favorite yoga studios. Jen Reuben had no intention of starting a yoga studio. She had recently moved back to her hometown of Salt Lake City and tried to find a studio that taught heated vinyasa yoga, which she had come to love while living in Pittsburgh for several years. She found that none of the studios taught the kind of yoga she wanted. By searching online she found Marc Weinreich, a transplant to Utah who also practiced vinyasa power yoga and also wanted a place to practice. One thing led to another, and in September 2012, Reuben and Weinreich opened Salt Lake Power Yoga in an upper floor of a building at 250 E. Broadway. The proximity to downtown and the panoramic views outside the studio windows immediately convinced them it was the right spot.

Salt Lake Power Yoga started with two teachers and just a few classes. Since then, it has grown to include 23 teachers who teach 55 classes per week. Reuben says the studio’s growth and success are due in large part to the welcoming atmosphere the teachers create. Many people see yoga as a very serious and rigid activity and are too intimidated to give it a try. “People feel welcome. People don’t feel out of place,” she says. “It’s turned into a place for people to connect and meet people who are like-minded.”

Most classes take place in the main studio space, which is usually heated to temperatures up to or above 100 degrees. Reuben says heated yoga results in an endorphin high she couldn’t find through any other workout. “It’s not just an exercise,” she says. “You can get physically fit a thousand different ways, but there’s just something that happens in the heated power vinyasa practice.”

Victoria Rose was one of those who recommended Salt Lake Power Yoga on the Utah Business Facebook page. “Not only does the studio have amazing class offerings, but each instructor also takes the time to get to know you and remember you by name,” she says. “Their focus on positive energy and building client relationships keeps me coming back every week!”
