Readers' Choice: Boothe Brothers Music

By Devin Felix

December 6, 2013

Each month, we ask our Facebook fans to nominate their favorite Utah-owned businesses and select one to feature here. This month we asked fans to tell us their favorite music stores. Want us to write about a business you love? Follow us at www.facebook.com/UtahBusiness and watch for the next time we ask for business recommendations.

Over the past 28 years, Boothe Brothers Music in Spanish Fork has become a fixture for musicians in southern Utah County.

The store started nearly three decades ago, when Steven Boothe, who had been teaching guitar lessons in his home, decided it might be nice to be his own boss. He and his wife opened a store in a small space in Spanish Fork and began selling guitars, sheet music and accessories. Business was slow at first, but after a few years customers started rolling in. Eventually the store relocated to its current location at 165 N. Main Street. It is now a full-service music store, selling band and orchestra instruments, guitars, keyboards, drums, sheet music and musical accessories. It also sells online at www.BoothMusic.com. Boothe owns the store with his brother Mike, and several other family members are involved in running the store.

“They are not only incredibly knowledgeable but they are friendly and support the community,” says Jen Heywood, who recommended Boothe Brothers on the Utah Business Facebook page.

Boothe Brothers has played a role in the education and development of countless children during its 28 years of business by selling and renting flutes, trumpets, violins, drum sticks and other instruments to children who played in school bands and orchestras. About a third of the store’s business comes from student instrument sales and rentals, Boothe says.

Boothe Brothers is also a location for musical performances and practice. The basement of the store has 12 lessons rooms and a recital space. The company also owns a 250-seat theater nearby, which it bought and remodeled about 12 years ago. Now it hosts open jam sessions every Thursday for blues, country, rock and acoustic musicians. It also rents the space to groups putting on concerts, plays and other performances.

“I love music. I grew up with music my whole life,” Boothe says. “To me it’s not work—it’s fun.”
