The Geological Society of America has given its George P. Woollard Award for outstanding contributions to geophysics to University of Utah geophysicist ROBERT B. SMITH, a world expert on earthquakes and volcanism in the Yellowstone National Park region. Smith is a University of Utah professor emeritus and research professor of geophysics, and a coordinating scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory run jointly by the USGS, the University of Utah and National Park Service. He is recognized as a leading expert on quakes and volcanism in the Yellowstone-Grand Teton National Park region, and for operating seismic and Global Positioning System networks that record quakes and ground deformation in the region.
JOE ATKIN was promoted to CEO of GOAL ZERO. Atkin previously served as President of the company. Prior to working for Goal Zero, Atkin was a senior manager at Sorenson Capital. Atkin has started four businesses and served as a President, CFO and VP of Marketing for several businesses. He received an MBA and BS in Economics from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
ZAGG Inc named KENT WUTHRICH executive vice president of marketing, where he will oversee global marketing efforts for the company and its brands, including iFrogz and invisibleSHIELD. Wuthrich joined ZAGG as vice president of creative for iFrogz, which was acquired by the company in 2011. DEREK SMITH has been appointed executive vice president of sales, where he will lead the company’s global sales efforts to increase distribution in retail outlets and online. Since joining ZAGG in 2007, he has amplified ZAGG’s presence in big box retailers domestically and internationally.
Intermountain Financial Group hired JEREMY LINDQUIST as its Long Term Care Specialist to educate, support, and motivate the firm’s agents and clients about Long Term Care insurance (LTCi). Lindquist possesses a strong passion about LTCi, and with almost 20 years of experience in the insurance industry, he is able to effectively work with agents and clients regarding the importance and need for LTCi.
WESLEY FELIX joined the Salt Lake City office of Snell & Wilmer as counsel in the commercial litigation group. Felix has nearly 20 years of legal experience representing clients in complex commercial cases including class actions, derivative actions and direct actions. He has represented clients in connection with significant securities and accountant’s liability matters and has represented clients in matters before the SEC, DOJ and PCAOB. Felix earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School after earning a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University and a B.A. in Philosophy and Economics from Whitman College.
GOV. GARY R. HERBERT was elected Chairman of the Western Governors' Association (WGA). Herbert’s primary focus and the overarching theme for his chairmanship is "Responsible Energy Development," with a goal of providing reliable, affordable and cleaner energy for the long term. Herbert will work with his colleagues, the private sector, tribal governments, universities, national labs, non-profit groups, federal and state agencies and other partners to identify and implement specific strategies for energy development in the West.
Richter7 hired JAYCI MINJARES as project manager. Before joining the Richter7 team, Minjares was the application support project manager at OC Tanner and project manager at Utah Interactive. Minjares is also two years into completing her computer science degree through Strayer University.
Jones Waldo added CHASE ROMNEY and PAUL SMITH as associates to its Salt Lake City office. Romney joins Jones Waldo as an associate after earning his bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah in Finance and his juris doctor in 2012 from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, Romney worked as the line editor of the Environmental Law Review and won the Best Brief Award for his legal research and writing. Smith graduated from the University of Utah with his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering in 2009, and went on to earn his juris doctor at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. He joins Jones Waldo’s litigation practice group with experience serving as an extern for the Honorable Roslyn O. Silver, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for Arizona and having worked as an intellectual property law clerk for a major golf product design and manufacturing company.
MICHAEL T. BUELL, FSMPS, CPSM earned the designation of “SMPS Fellow.” The Fellows of the society for Marketing Professional Services represent the highest level of experience and leadership in marketing within the design and building industry. The Fellows serve as a resource at the chapter, regional, and national levels, providing insight, ideas, programs, and mentoring for the benefit of the members and the society. In addition, these individuals teach, write, and speak on marketing issues outside of SMPS, working to advance the profession of marketing professional services throughout the architectural/engineering/construction industry. Buell is the Marketing Director of MHTN Architects and brings with him 20 years of strategic marketing and business development leadership expertise within the A/E/C industry.
SKYLER RUBEL, AiA, has been promoted to co-director of K-12 Educational Design at MHTN Architects, Inc., a Salt Lake City-based design firm. As co-director, Rubel will share his knowledge of design and construction gained more than 34 years of architectural experience with Utah school districts to enable successful educational projects for Utah’s children. Rubel’s strengths of listening and follow-through ensure that school districts’ needs are understood and respected and that projects are well managed.
DAVID DAINING, AiA, leeD AP, NCArB has been named Director of Health Care at MHTN Architects, Inc. Daining brings innovation and strategic vision to health care planning and design projects. The focus of his 27-year career is to assist clients in enhancing the health care experience and creating comforting and compelling spaces that are functional and effective. As director of Health Care Design at MHTN Architects, Daining is responsible for team leadership, marketing health care services, health care master planning and design coordination.
