Outdoor Retailer Brings Economic Boost to Utah

Outdoor Retailer (OR) gets bigger every year. This year, multiple events were added to the already jam-packed schedule. Beginning on Wednesday with the Open Air Demo, the outdoor party won’t stop until August 5.

Utah has hosted Outdoor Retailer Summer and Winter Markets since 1996. OR has done more than bring retailers, manufacturers, industry advocates and media to conduct business through the markets in Utah—it has also brought huge economic gain to the state, and each year looks better than the last.  

A survey of convention delegates conducted by the University of Utah’s Bureau of Economic and Business Research estimates that nearly $25 million in total visitor spending will be generated during the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market.

This year’s summer market marks another great moment for Outdoor Retailer and Utah, and it will be the biggest outdoor market to date in North America, according to Scott Beck, president and CEO of Visit Salt Lake.

“It’s the biggest all-time outdoor summer market and because of that it’s the biggest outdoor market ever hosted,” he said. He also noted that the show’s expected record attendance of 27,000 is a very positive affirmation that Utah is the best possible home for Outdoor Retailer.

The Recreation Economy Report notes that, nationally, the outdoor recreation economy is responsible for:

  • 6.1 million direct American jobs
  • $646 billion in direct consumer spending
  • $39.9 billion in federal tax revenue
  • $39.7 billion in state/local tax
