Washburn also went through four fundraisers internally. “Not only our volunteers, but our staff got tired and worn out,” he says.

Two things kept the process moving forward. The first was passion. “You just have to believe, you have to be passionate about what you’re doing. If you’re not passionate, no one else will be.”

The second key was sheer determination. “The main thing that works is just keep flogging through the process,” he says. “We tried to be very rigorous in the process and just keep meeting and contacting people.”

Giving Thanks

In the end, a strong core of major donors, government backing and hundreds of smaller donors got the project off the ground. “And everyone from government to major donors have been thrilled with the project,” Washburn says. “Almost everyone has said, ‘I thought it was going to be fantastic, but it’s so much better than I could have envisioned.’”

The public has embraced the new Museum of Natural Curiosity as well. Washburn says membership sales have exceeded expectations, “beyond anything we could imagine.”

When wrapping up such a large-scale campaign, Washburn says it’s important to genuinely thank those who gave their time, resources and money. “You just can’t be appreciative enough of people who help you bring a vision and a dream to life.”
