In February 2012, on a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the Zions Bank Wasatch Front Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased 0.2 percent. Over the last 12 months, Utah’s economy has shown significant signs of improvement, leading many residents to exhibit higher levels of economic optimism. However, rising fuel prices, which have increased 5 percent between January and February along the Wasatch Front, may challenge the recent rise in optimism.
Facilitating this month’s inflation was higher costs in transportation and housing. Both categories rose at a healthy pace in February, but higher fuel costs may accelerate local inflation in the near future. The sudden jump in gasoline prices has served as a sobering reminder of the risks energy costs pose to the economic recovery.
