A Local Business Weathers the Government Shutdown

By Kaylie Astin

February 18, 2014

“We want to be able to say [to the tour operators] who are helping people plan their trips for next year, ‘Hey, you know what? Utah is taking the lead here yet again. We’ve got National Park Insurance, and you can tell your people that they can come to Utah anytime and our parks will be open.’”

Utah, with its beautiful national parks, is a popular destination for many international visitors on sightseeing tours. These tourists pour millions into Utah’s economy every year, and while the shutdown definitely wreaked havoc for Ruby’s Inn, Syrett doesn’t intend to let political fighting slow him down in the future. “What these idiots in Washington are doing, it doesn’t matter, because Utah parks are going to be open. Come see us.” He believes Utah will be a leader in the tourism industry, and he hopes other states will follow Utah’s example.
