What needs to be done in that arena?
Continue to support emerging companies, and grow them to become successful companies. There is nothing like success to increase the critical mass and bring more resources.
What is Utah’s potential in the life sciences sector?
Utah has a strong life science foundation in medical devices and dietary supplements, excellent innovation from its research universities and best-in-class commercialization programs. With a revitalized focus on its commitment to personalized medicine, the University of Utah is poised to help lead the effort to change the way healthcare is delivered, through innovation, research and policy development, bringing deserved recognition to the state. Utah State University has invested in restructuring its commercialization efforts.
Through the growth of numerous companies (Edwards Lifesciences, Nelson Laboratories, Bard Access, Myriad Genetics and Merit Medical, for example), many new life science jobs have been and continue to be created. With the success of every emerging company, the critical mass of Utah’s life sciences industry increases, and the interest in living, working and investing in Utah grows. The potential continues to grow stronger.
How do we get there from here?
Continue the programs that have been described here. Ask our legislature for their continued support, and work closely with them to chart an optimal course. Make sure that industry and academia work closely together to identify and meet current and future needs. Keep believing in and investing in Utah!
