Utah has much to celebrate. Our unique combination of business-friendly policies coupled with our innovative culture has led to sustained economic growth and success—and the rest of the nation is noticing. Utah recently claimed yet another top ranking for our vibrant economic environment from Pollina, who named Utah No. 1 in its Ten Pro-Business States list. This top ranking comes after the state claimed the No. 2 spot on the list for three consecutive years.
In this issue of Utah Business, we tip our hats to the many companies that have helped build Utah into the economic powerhouse that it is today. We begin by celebrating the heritage and accomplishments of four trailblazing organizations, including the company featured on our cover, Browning. Established in 1878, this Morgan-based company has long been an innovator in the firearms industry and has become a fixture in the story of Utah. We also profile the legacies of Southern Utah University, Goldenwest Credit Union and Bailey’s Moving and Storage. Each Trailblazer has a unique and inspiring history, and we applaud their enduring success. Read their stories beginning on page 74.
Our second feature shines the spotlight on Utah’s fastest-growing companies in our fifth annual Fast 50 program. These companies have experienced phenomenal growth, which is especially impressive considering the years of economic difficulties that they’ve powered through. You’ll find the Fast 50 list on page 56.
In addition to the Fast 50, we also honor eight of the state’s fastest-growing young companies—companies that have been in business less than five years. The Emerging 8, found on page 72, are another indication that Utah’s business infrastructure is strong and vibrant for entrepreneurs looking to launch their own venture.
While we congratulate the successful growth that the Fast 50 and Emerging 8 companies have experienced, we also applaud their contribution to Utah’s overall economy. These 58 companies are economic engines for the state, collectively employing nearly 25,000 Utahns. Though diverse in industry and size, each company on the Fast 50 and Emerging 8 lists shares common business principles such as adapting and innovating to stay ahead, committing to customers and employees, and taking strategic risks that aren’t always a sure bet. Hear more about their impressive growth by listening to exclusive one-on-one interviews found on our website (utahbusiness.com), our iPad app or on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/utahbusinessmagazine). We hope that their insights and experiences will give you ideas that you can put to work in your company.
At Utah Business, we’re excited to celebrate the many outstanding companies and business leaders that have helped shape Utah into a state envied by the rest of the nation. From the many organizations that have rich and inspiring legacies to the promise of today’s fast-growing and innovative companies, Utah is truly an exciting place to be.
