BoomStartup Demo Day Brings in Millions for Startups

Press Release

August 14, 2014

Salt Lake City – BoomStartup, one of the nation’s first seed accelerator programs, held its BoomStartup 2014 Demo Day Tuesday in Park City. The standing-room only event featured 12 startup companies representing industries from gaming to healthcare to cloud computing.

“This was a powerhouse year with a more diverse set of companies and industries than we had ever seen in previous years,” said John Richards, co-founder of BoomStartup. “The companies included in our summer program were drawn from a record applicant pool of more than 875 companies. We saw two firsts with this year’s program—we had the first international company and the first two startups in the program with female CEOs.”

BoomStartup recently closed a $3 million fund. One of its first initiatives with the additional funding was to transition to a year-round program. The organization recently opened its third location, based in Park City, in partnership with Pando Labs and Park City Angels Network.

These are some of the companies that pitched for investor dollars at this year’s BoomStartup Demo Day:

  • Novi Security provides a product aimed at solving the security problems of renters. It has already raised $250,000 from angels and mentors and has garnered $175,000 in sales through a Kickstarter program.
  • LionHeart Innovations was created by a mother, caregiver and CEO to provide a medical app that provides a better way manage personal and family medical needs.
  • GrassWire has created a crowd source news engine that works in real-time to leverage the crowd in creating and accessing accurate news. It brings people together to create collaborative news reports by voting on and fact-checking social media content in real time.
  • JobPiper has developed an application to match companies with top applicants and predict employee success. Founders say their solution essentially “clones your best employees.” They have numerous partnerships in the works and are offering a free predicative solution to help companies identify low and top performers. Mura Interactive is getting attention with DubWars, a music game that combines the mechanics of a top-down shooter with dubstep and electronica music. The gamer’s weapons are synced to the music creating times of intense weapon load outs and calm moments where their survival skills are tested.
  • ActiveNet Technologies created an inexpensive data integration platform that is 12 times faster and one quarter the cost of competing solutions.
  • Wear My Tags, founded in Sri Lanka, has launched a supply chain company that connects fashion designers, manufacturers and retailers from across the world. Wear My Tags launched just over two weeks ago and had $218,000 in sales in its first 15 days.
  • ProMD was founded by doctors and other health professionals to combat the problem of hospital readmission. Its integrated patient mobile application simplifies discharge instructions, automates processes, facilitates patient compliance, identifies high risk patients and improves outcomes. RoomChoice automates leasing and empowers students to sign, renew, pay, choose their room and even recruit roommates (and buildingmates) online.
  • SmartStay uses new micro-location iBeacon technology to change how hotels and resorts communicate with and market their services and facilities to guests.
  • Adamatic has developed an online advertising platform for the auto industry to deliver customized, personalized ads to potential customers in real-time. They have captured 10 percent of the dealer market in the state by increasing click-through rates by 350 percent.
  • Suralink provides a single platform for companies and accountants to track, manage and simplify the document exchange process during audits. Its drag-and-drop features deliver an inherently organized process that has customers shouting their praises.

The next BoomStartup program will be held this winter at the Park City campus. Applications will open on September 1, and any company can apply at http://boomstartup.com/">http://BoomStartup.com.”
