Andrew K. Smith

Making His Pointe

Tom Haraldsen

November 1, 2008

Even though 32-year-old Chicago native Andrew K. Smith grew up surrounded by medical practitioners, he wanted to prove he could be successful taking a different career path, and he’s certainly proven his point with AxisPointe. As president and founder of the technology-based, post-construction customer service and facility asset management company in Lehi, Smith developed a service that is now recognized as a national leader in its industry. “Almost everyone in my family is in the medical field,” says Smith. “I guess I was kind of the black sheep, because I decided to run with technology, and it’s paid off. I joke that I’m making more money than they are.” Success actually began for Smith while he was in college. He founded CaptureQuest in 1998 while studying at what was then Utah Valley State College. The online marketing technology company created a patented product called “Popmercial,” which was later acquired by Avalon Digital Marketing Systems. Smith left Avalon to start AxisPointe in 2002. “This opportunity presented itself about six and a half years ago, and it would have been hard not to pursue it,” he says. “I love starting a new company and seeing it become successful.” AxisPointe’s clientele are builders, both residential and commercial. The company helps outsource post-construction services during the building warranty period, including buyer orientation and walkthrough, punchlist assignments and warranty callback processing. “Homeowners’ calls usually come to us, rather than to the builder,” Smith says. “This is a service we provide that helps eliminate a lot of the hassle for both our clients, and their clients.” Last year, Smith created a franchising division of AxisPointe called HomeWorx Franchising LLC, and to date, 26 franchises have been sold in the United States. Those regional franchises are providing the same post-construction warranty service to local builders that AxisPointe created. “Franchising is an exciting concept for us,” Smith said. “It has helped accelerate our growth.” This past year, even in a down housing economy, AxisPointe enjoyed a 120 percent increase in sales. In August, Constructech magazine named AxisPointe, Inc. one of the hottest providers in the residential construction market. Smith says the recognition is a huge honor for the company. “It’s the largest circulated magazine in the industry,” he says. “We’ve already seen a big increase in leads since the award was announced.” And he fully expects that growth to continue in the next few years. Smith’s brother, Aaron, has now also chosen another path besides the medical field and works with Smith at CaptureQuest and AxisPointe “He didn’t want to become a dentist and look in someone’s mouth,” Smith says with a smile. “He’d rather talk to them.” Though success is smiling on Smith, he is not finished pursuing new business ventures. He and his wife, Shauna, recently bought a Kneaders Bakery and Café franchise and opened a location in the Lehi/Highland area. You just can’t slow down that entrepreneurial gene.
